Default Don\'t drink and drive..this ones a tear jerker..

got this in an email...

Dear Mom,
I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom
So I had a sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right,
The party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming, Mom
Something I expected least.

Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mom, his voice seems far away.

My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
This girl is going to die.

I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive,
Now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.

Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
Tell daddy to be brave,
And when I go to heaven,
Put Daddy's Girl on my grave.

Someone should have taught him,
That it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.

My breath is getting shorter, Mom
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And I'm so unprepared.

I wish that you could hold me Mom,
As I lie here and die.

And a reminder of how smart my parents were in making sure I was off the roads before 10pm on school nights and 11pm on weekends. I never understood them when they said, "Nothing good happens after that anyway!"

I'm sure my 14 year-old daughter will graciously accept this rule when she's in high school!!

Drinking and driving never really made sense to me until last summer one of my favorite campers was hit by a drunk driver a week before he was supposed to come and be a Jr. Counselor for me. Unfortunatley Drunk Driving laws are not harsh enough. Sure people make mistakes, but if you kill someone, its something you will never forget. I hope it haunts drunk drivers. Tougher laws...thats what we need for this one.

Drinking and driving is stupid and wrong...It makes me sick that we are so leniant to repeat offenders...

If this offends anyone then so be it, but you should lose your license and serve jail time for the 1st conviction! What does it take...do you have to kill someone before you quit drinking and driving.

When I was in high school I had a close friend kill someone in a traffic accident. My friend was really drunk, and I saw the guy he killed laying on the pavement. My friend got 6-months probation and the next year at school he was drinking at parties with no remorse or lesson learned from killing someone. I got into a physical altercation with him(probably not the best way to handle it) and I think I taught him a lesson...I have no sympathy for people that die while drinking and driving, but the thousands of innocent lives they take every year makes me very very sad.

Drunk drivers are an odd lot. Most repeat offenders have other issues than alcohol abuse. The prison system is full of them. They do not get treatment for the root cause of the problem, rather, they get treated for the symptom. Many are actually Bi-polar and don't know it. They fall through the cracks in the leagle system, wind up in jail.. and never do get treatment.. This is something a doctor freind told me just the other day when we were talking about a guy we saw out golfing who was pretty much hammered.
