Default Upper River Report

Spent Friday afternoon, a very wet Saturday, and today sitting on the hook on the upper Willie. Conditions looked to be perfect Friday with temps at 55 degrees, and good color for what was admittedly a few, less than a thousand, hardy springers over the falls. But past experience has proved numbers don't always matter. Well those fish that havent been biters in the lower river, have not changed their habits once above the falls. Other fishers had the same idea with many spots being tried. WaterDog hit it hard too. Not a bump! Zippo, nada. :depressed: Saturdays miserable weather chased most off the water early, but some of us stuck it out to no avail. Even went back out Sunday for more punishment. Oh well, there's always next weekend if the moss holds off. Yes there is some moss, but not bad yet.

Did get this pic of a double rainbow on Friday--no pot o'gold though...here fishy, fishy...

Spent sevreal hrs on Saturday above Newberg. Nada bump. Watched several boats and saw no activity. However, in the area just above Newberg, I marked several large fish, then as i went further up, there were obviously less to none. Salem should see em Wed or Thursday. If weeds are already showing up, it wont take many more days and the Willy will not be fishable...

We were out there on Saturday and watched one boat above us net a nice one. Heard of one other one but of course we got nada. Wouldn't of been so bad if the weather didn't suck so much. I was really looking forward to being on the water with some sunshine. Nada.

Fished for 3 hours on Thursday. Still early and not a fish to the net. A bit of the green stuff fouling up our lines. Not bad yet.....

A week or two more.

It's not early by any means and if you wait 2 or 3 weeks you may catch nothing but algae in 4 lb globs. In past years we've caught fish with only 20 counted at the falls. The water is about as good as gets right now and there are plenty of them in there. The last few years it's been a matter of finding a biter. There are not many of them. Last year there where weeks of 2000+ a day and yet very few were caught. 1999 was the last good year and for me 2002 was ok but took 40hrs per fish which pushes my patients.

10 hours on the hook Saturday and 7 on Sunday and not even a driveby. Read a book, cleaned up the boat, and tied a bunch of halibut rigs. Gonna bring a few more projects with me this weekend or maybe work on my tan.
