Default Cheap Lanterns

I was over at Costco tonight and see they have marked down their Coleman Northstar propane lanterns to $24.77 each. This includes the carry case. I thought it was a heck of a deal, considering they are normally around $50. I saw them a couple months ago for something like $44 at Costco.

I like the Northstar large single mantle lanterns better than the standard dual mantle propane lanterns. I think the Northstar lanterns are quite a bit lighter.

They have the orange globe, which I dont know if I am going to like, but I can always change them out later with clear ones.

They say the amber globes doesnt draw the bugs like the clear ones.

But I doubt it is as bright with the amber globe installed. I will find out this weekend.

Hey BOE,

Good heads up -- that's a screaming deal. I bought one at BiMart a few years ago for $40 and have been very happy with it. It came with the clear globe and a soft case. It does suck the propane more than a standard lantern -- so I rigged up a direct connection to a bulk tank - saves on the hassle of the disposable cylinders.

I saw the Costco one with hard case and wondered why they went to the amber globe? I think it would be annoying - but at least cheap to replace like you said.

It is by far the brightest lantern under $50.

You have to spend >$150 for the Petromax (?) gas lantern that's equivalent to a 400 watt bulb to go to the next brightness level (grunt, grunt).
