Default Plug Cut Help - Miter Box ?

Do you folks use a Herring Jig like the "Gilly Kutter" or "Folbe" ? or do most of you folks freehand cut your herring for plug-cut. I know some prefer a blunt cut on the face of the herring but the jigs seem to put more of a 45 degree on the face. Any help would be appreciated. BTW I have a "Gilly" . Thanks in advance!!!

For what its woth...I cut about 2 doz herring with the mitre box and couldn't get 90% of them to spin. A guy on the board showed me how to freehand it and every one spins great. I threw the box away

I use both boxes and have gotten hits on both cuts. I've noticed the Folbe gives a little tighter roll with the chinook side than the gilly. They both work well for me.

Unless you have the experience and time to play with freehand cuts, you are better off using a cutting box. I use the folbe and also freehand. The benifit of freehand is that you can get a bunch of different types of spins.

nothing against cutting boxes, I've used them in the past, but I personally like to do it freehand. Just practice and experiment with different cuts. I have a standard I like for chinook rolls, and one for coho.
Everybody had their own preference though, freehand is just faster for me I guess.

Hook placement is what matters.

That and fresh herring are what I consider to be the most important.

If you don't have your cut down, I recommend getting a box. I don't know the name (Danielson?), but the cheap yellow one for $2.99 they sell at both FMS and Joes is exactly the same as that purple one they sell at both places for $6.99 (I think those metal Pro Motion ones are for sucks..... terrible cut). I dig the yellow ones and always use the "chinook/king cut". Like RK said, hook placement is just as important and another topic..... I'd suggest after a year of fishing confidently cutting with a box, try experimenting with your own cuts and rigging. Not that you can't figure it out sooner, but I'm becoming a greater believer in the fishing with confidence thing. I now know what roll a fish will bite (confidence). If the fishing is slim, I'm much less likely to start doing goofy stuff and messing with my gear. Use the box until your confident, before messing with the custom cut.

My $.02,
