last chance bruins
Well I had a couple of buddies call me up with a SW bear tag and asked if I knew where any were. Just so happens I know where a bunch are and don't care to hunt them myself, so I was glad to hear they would exterminate them out of my elk hunting holes. The first night (saturday) I scoped out a bruin sitting flat on a stump about 20 min. before dark. No time to get closer so I ranged him at 400 yards, got a good rest and my buddy proceeded to shoot holes in his stump. After four shots he made it to the brush. A few min. later he reappeared sitting on his stump, but lack of light caused the end of the night.
I know of one monster in another hole so tuesday after work we headed up there. After an hour of glassing a dandy showed himself (300+) and we were just about to ruin his day and another one popped out. It was a cub, but I couldn't quite tell the size. It looked real small at first compared to the big sow. Out came the spotting scope and it was a yearling roughly 150 lbs.. Big enough to be weened and legal. So the greenlight was on again, and my two buddies were so excited one of them shot before the other was ready. Nine shots later and a 300 yard sprint on her part and she made it to the brush. Good times, bad shooting. Oh well it wasn't my tag but fun to be out there spotting and early scouting for bow season.
