Default Railroad ties

I heard that the old railroad ties piled up by the tracks when they replace them are free for the taking. Does anyone know if that is true? I just paid $19 a piece for them at Lowes.

That doesn't sound right, and I doubt Lowes gets them for free.

Be carefull using rr ties close to your house. They WILL attract carpenter ants.

Hewsfisher is right. Before buying those ant attractors get your calculators out and add up the price of those things. Then ask the price of cottage stones and see what will last longer? What the price difference is? and how much it will cost you to get rid of those ants. I am a home inspector and I tell every client not to use those things they will get carpenter ants if they dont already.

No, the railroad ties are not free for the taking. They have been sold to contractors. The contractors will remove old ties from RR property and then be sold.

so if a guy wanted to be an entrepreneuer, he could get a big load of railroad ties and hide one in the crawspace of each house in a new subdivision. Then, in a year or so, he could come by in his Pest removal van and treat all of the houses for a fee to rid them of Carpenter ants.

Not only are they not free for the taking. If you get caught you would probably get arrested for theft. It is also trespassing to fish from the railroad tracks or right of ways. You will probably get a nice ticket for that also.
I gave up a killer sturgeon hole because of the issues.I also work for the railroad.I know that due to the "Homeland Security" stuff and the liability issues they are really getting tough on these issues.
You would be amazed how quiet a train can be when its rolling down the tracks. They really can be right on top of you before you know it.So if you do decide to still fish there please be very, very careful.Always watch the tracks really close when crossing.
I knew an engineer that had the misfortune of hitting and killing a couple people that were on the tracks. Not a good thing to have to live with.
Also, since I quit fishing my favorite sturgeon hole a few years ago. There have been 2 derailments in that spot. With cars going into the water. You could imagine what would happen if a person had been fishing there.
You should be able to find ties for about $10 apiece I thought.$19 sound really high to me but its been awhile since I looked.
