Default Pine Creek Bear Hunt

Just got back from my bear hunt. Excellent, excellent trip. Only ended up with one bear for 3 tags, but it was still a great hunt.

We didn't really hunt bear very hard and still got to shoot at 2 of them. First one was a 450 yard shot at a decent black bear that just didn't quite connect. Saturday I found another one at 100 yards. Not a big bear, probably 170, but a nice brown color. Perfect shot, she went 10 feet, dropped and then rolled 200 yards down to the bottom of a ravine. :depressed: We got her, but not without some effort. The pack out is what killed us. We'd hiked in 3 miles on Sheep Mountain to get to her, then had to go back out 3 more through some of the steepest country out there. Took most of the day to do.

Snow was a problem. Couldn't get too far up most of the roads. If you're willing to hike, you can find some game, but not much is down low.

Didn't get any turkeys. Found one group of 5 toms and 20 hens, but they would not respond to us. We did however catch some great fish in the Snake. 4 lb smallmouth, 6 lb channel cats, big trout and tons of crappie.

All in all excellent trip. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to post in the near future. Had a great time taking Cody on his first bear hunt. Thanks again to Scotty and Diane, Rich and my Dad. Good luck to the rest of you.

BirdHunter: Sounds like a great trip. Iv'e spent alot of time over in that part of the country, I was usually in the Snake but sometimes we didn't geat a tag so it was Pine Creek that we would go to. Did you go to Richland or the dam for the smallies and the cats? Glad you had a good trip

Sounds like a great trip!! I love that part of the country!! Those combo experiences are fantastic, one of my favorite parts about attending community college in Ontario back in the late 80's.

Did ya see any WOLVES??

lightline - All the fish we got were below Oxbow. Between Pine Creek and the tunnel.

Rogue and Eggo - Nope, no wolves.....yet.

Birdhunter:I did some Turkey investigating in the area this last weekend Baker to Pendleton) . Almost went up that way but stayed north of La Grande and near HWY 244. Talk to the gammies and checked out some new areas. Still don't know what I'm doing but if I see other turkey hunters, I guess I'm getting closer.
