Default Rude/Snotty Replies

With all of the "new" news about the closure, the topic of sea lions, and countless other topics, there sure seems to be a lot of very rude and snotty replies to those who, I'm sure, aren't as up to speed on all of the latest and greatest.

Hey man, if someone is jazzed because they heard some "breaking info" that is probably old news to many, let them have their fun...don't degrade them because there a little behind times.

Also, why insult a guy's knowledge about a river if his facts are correct? Fast Action, a buddy of mine, was sorta, in a rude way, told he didn't know what he was talking about on the Sandy. Obviously you don't know Matt, because he KNOWS the Sandy!!

Sarcasm...hey, I'm the king, but rudeness, what for...especially in a public forum?

We've got newbies to "fish for fun" guys to those who make a living off the sport...let's respect one another's positions and keep the comments positive. If you don't like a post, read it and move to the next. If you don't understand a post or disagree, have some dignity in how your word your response.

My .02.

Why don't you look for similar topics before you post!

Hey, good point.

And just to be on notice, I am a maximizer on the raz scale around here, but I never mean to be mean, if you know what I mean!

I agree Rola, but at the same time there needs to be a balance. This is not referring to you BluePig, but in the same spirit as a recent post addressed to New Users, people who think they may be posting "new" news can do everyone a favor if they just take a quick look, at least at the first full page of postings and make sure it isn't already being discussed.

(For example) before I post a report about the Sandy, I take a quick peek and if someone has recently posted one I add to theirs instead of starting another. And if I am curious about prawn rigs, I'll do a quick search before asking the community. You don't have to live on iFish to to do a quick scan or a quick search before posting.

Peace

You're absolutely right WLW...good addition!

There's just a different "tone" in the following:

"Check out other posts on this topic" or "I didn't know about this spot on the river"

versus

"Are you blind? This topic is old news!" or "You obviously don't know anything about this river!"

Right on, and instead of just telling someone to go do a search (they might not know how yet) be a nice guy and if you know where the topic is include a link to it.

Do that and you've just made a friend instead of coming off poorly.

Good points Mike.

After re-reading my reply on another thread, I have since changed it.

My original post was a joke, and I thought that was clear by the rolling laughing guys and jester at the end of my post.

My second post was in response to the reply I got for my joke (obviously my sense of humor and the other person's are a bit different),and it has now been edited to be a bit more "nice".

Hope everyone catches springers a plenty this year!

Tight lines all,
Chris

it is not a matter of arguing. The facts were not in dispute.

I have been out of the fishing loop due to work being busy, i came across some news that i thought share-worthy and posted, I failed to read the posts to see if the information had been posted previously, thats my fault.

It was the responses to my post that were in issue. This is one of the faults of written communication over the net, the tone of the text is interpreted by the reader not the author. I have been a member of this board for some time and have met some GREAT guys (and gals). I have seen it go through turmoil back when political topics were allowed.

I hate to see any turf wars brew. To the two that i bantered with over the PM, I apologize if I offended and your apologies are well recieved.

I requested the original post, (and it was granted), be deleted so this issue can die and we can all learn about it.

fish on ... I guess its the stress of no more springers

I'm going to allow this, this one time... but please keep non fishing topics to LIG.
I think we need to hear it once and a while, and now is a good time. I appreciate your thoughts, and others do, also.

This board has become cranky with the fishing closure, as of late. Plus, it is getting VERY large.

Anyhow, let's keep things friendly. Please?

Here's a thought, if you feel the need to correct someone about something they posted, shoot them a PM instead of blasting them in the public forum. Reasonable people will react better to a bit of private advice than having their error pointed out in public.

I think you have to understand that a lot of ifish patrons are not fast readers, fast writers, and not real experienced in the ways of on-line forums. Many are not what I would describe as particularly facile with the english language. That just goes with the turf. We were all newbies once.

Im with Fastaction on this one. And by the way. I was not blasting your friend who "knows the Sandy better than anyone on this site" I was just pointing out that the hole is on the willy, i didnt realize there was one on the Sandy too. Lets all just relax and post about fishing here.

I think it's understandable for people who look forward to spring chinook fishing all year long to get a little po'd because things on the Columbia turned out the way they did. After all the amount of $$$ spent on boats, tackle and fuel is huge! Disappointment is understandable
I think Jennie has done a great job in keeping things pretty peaceful here on ifish though

I think people are overlooking a facet of online conversation here, there are no facial gestures in type written messeges. No body language, no attitude, no direct human interaction to associate with the words you read. Black letters with a white back-ground is all there is and ever was.

See where I'm coming from here? With a typewritten post, attitude is left solely to the reader to interpret, and I think in many many cases it is interpreted far too negatively or aggresively than it was intended to be (if at all)

When you read posts and replies, you are selecting the attitude you think the poster had in mind when he or she wrote it. We all do it.

Two things need to happen. One more obvious than the other is: people posting to debate or discuss or even challenge opinions need to remember to do so in a way that gets your point across without the possibility of being offensive or downright rude.
The other: remember youre reading words written more often in the heat of the moment, by people empassioned by thier views and beliefs. Dont assume you can detect an attitude via these words. Dont assume a challenging remark is meant to be rude or insulting. It will only encourage you to continue the conversation in what YOU think is a rude tone.

On the other hand, many people intentionally try to toe the line as closely as they can. It happens a lot. All I can say is...theres a huge amount of gray area between outright rude, and sarcastic or creative harmless bantering, which is hard to regulate without turning this site into a completely PC sunday senior brunch at the local church kind of place.

I dont expect it to ever completely go away and I think its part of what keeps this place interesting and alive. But trust me, this site has come a long way from the days of old when you could call Stew an ultra-liberal ninny mamas boy and get away with it.

I can handle the posts, no matter how rude or unfriendly they are, although Ive often responded to them with an equal amount of sarcasm or outrite rudeness myself Ill try a little harder to keep it well above the belt.

When someone makes an effort to post what he believes or thinks is worthy for others to read, and it is followed by a post with nothing more than one of these:

That one gets me going almost every time, and I often interpret it as a "whatever dude, shut-up your an idiot" which I am almost sure it was meant to be.

Peace!

R-v-W. I tend to agree with the gist of your post. I would like to add a thought or two to your line of reasoning if I may.
There is no universal set of laws pertaining to interpetation of the emoticoms we use here. You may get peeved when someone uses thinking it's a blowoff of your opinion when that was never the intention. I experience that reaction recently when I used to amplify a statement on another post. Often, participants of a conversation are on completely different contextual threads that have very little if any relationship to each other.
I won't even get into typos and misspelling since all that does is get peoples backs up around here.
I can only suggest that everyone take a minute to read what they are about to post at least twice. You might find that there is a better, less offensive way to make your point.
You have a golden opportunity to smooth out your message and do something signifigant each and every time you post. Don't blow it.

..and for heaven's sake don't blow it up, blow on it, or just plain blow your nose on it.

That would make it a really snotty reply. Har har har.

Can you tell I've had less than three hours of sleep?
David got home from play practice at midnight, and left for a speech tournament at 5:00.

He is really blowing it as far as my sleep.

HUH!! WHAT??. No Officer, I wasn't sleeping.
I would never suggest that you are spending...WAY too much energy on David's extracurriculars. But then, I had to get my name somehow.
Play practice?? Sounds fishy to me. But then, what do I know.
Are you actually getting up and fixing breakfast and whatever? 12:00-5:00 means you should have gotten 5 hours of sleep at least and that's about half enough in my book
