Default Who is going turkey hunting this year?

Last year I hunted around Mt. Hood and didn't see a thing. Ended up driving south towards Roseburg and only saw three hens, no goblers. Any tips on where to go? Want to hunt around Mt. Hood or around Corvallis area. Looking for somebody to go with and learn some tricks. Last year was my first time out for turkey. Any information would help. Thanks!

I'll be out shagging those bad boy's. Nothing like seeing the sunrise and listening to the woods come alive. Oh, and the turkey hunting is kinda fun also.

Be careful and show sportsmanship out there this year.

Birdhunter-
I got those sites. That helped a lot. I will be hunting the east side of Mt. Hood in the white river unit. I have a spot picked out, but should do some scouting. What turkey locators do you use? Crow call, preditor call, owl? I used a crow and a preditor call last year. The problem I had was that I wasn't hunting far enough east last year. I never got into the birds. I will have to be more prepared this year.

Car door.

Seriously. Slam a car door and if there's a tom around, he'll gobble back. When you're out there scouting, you really don't want to call them in or get too close. All you want to do is find out if there is a tom in the area. When I'm walking around I usually use a slate call and just give a few clucks. If I get one to gobble back, good, but then I back off. No sense in educating them or making them call shy. Most of the time you can just sneak around real quiet in the morning and if there are turkeys around, you'll be able to hear them. No need to call or anything. Good luck.

Best locators are on the side of your head. Listen on a high ridge right before dark, the toms will be gobbling on the roost. You can hear them a mile away on a quiet evening, tough to pinpoint exactly though. It will give you a starting point in the morning when they will gobble again before coming off the roost.

Birdhunter-
I hunted last year with a couple different slate calls. One is a quaker boy with three different surfaces. One is slate, one aluminum, and don't know what the other one is. Then I have a straight slate call with a couple of different strikers. This is all I should need right. Besides camo, gun, and all that other stuff. How many decoys to you hunt with?

I only use one slate call. H S Strut something or other. Most of the calls on the market will work just fine. Once you get used to using it you can learn how to make all kind of different calls on just one slate. I carry two different strikers, but primarily use one. I forget what it's made out of, but will look it up when I have a second.

I don't use decoys, but I do think they're a good idea. Just one extra thing to pack and I've been successful w/out them in the past. They can be very helpful however.
