PORTCO Scare
Witnessed an elderly gentleman almost drown at the Portco boat launch this afternoon. They were docking their boat and he jumped for the dock and missed. After going under at least twice (he couldn't swim)he manged to get his hands on the gunnel with his partners help. However, the motor was still running and the boat dragged him clear into the river and around the launch to the opposite side (we were throwing pfd's and yelling at the guy to shut off his motor but he never did). This went on for at least 3-4 minutes until he finally got hold of the dock and was helped up. The gentleman was so exhausted he couldn't stand.

Re: PORTCO Scare
Sounds like someone that should always wear a PFD ... docking and anchoring are especially good times to have them on. I'm glad the story isn't a tragedy!

Re: PORTCO Scare
That's for sure Pete. Alone in the dark at O'dark 30. A little miss step and a head bonk on the dock . Bad image. I usually make sure I'm wearing mine at those two times. Anchoring and at the dock.
hanks for the post and the heads up.

Grandpa Fish, Welcome to ifish. Sort of a strange beginning to post on a 4 year old thread.
Portco marine park and launch is located on the Washington side of the Columbia river between I-5 and I-205. You access it off of Columbia Drive, Blvd, Street.

My apology's to all who reads this.
I am sorry that I am of no help with directions to Portco.
I do apologize for my bluntness, but it appears we are now waiting for two introductory stories.
Welcome to ifish.

Re: PORTCO Scare
With all due respect Anna, I understand that the story thing is customary, and understand that it is some sort of unwritten rule, but a lot of times newcomers don't realize that, and to demand it like you've just done (with NO tact whatsoever) is really against the spirit of iFish.
How about instead of " Cough up a Story."...
"Welcome to iFish Grandpa Fish, I'm not sure how to get to Portco, but there are definitely folks here who could help. You should try posting a post on the community page asking for directions to the ramp. It's also customary to tell a good fish story as an introduction. Again! Welcome!!
You want to talk more about this... I'd be happy to discuss it in a private message. Consider this 'public education'.

thank you for clearing that up
as a newbie I was asked for a story but couldn't think of anything recent so I went on, now I think I'll go back and tell one from way back.
thanks

Welcome to i-fish Grandpa! Glad to have you aboard! I don't know where Portco is either so I'm waiting like you are to hear from someone who does. Don't let one response to your 1st post discourage you from posting in the future. I'm sure no harm was meant....it just wasn't presented very well. Hang in there!

It appears ADM has been around long enough to know the "spirit" of ifish, talk about an overreaction

Re: PORTCO Scare
Portco can be found by taking the beach's exit off of HWY 14 in Vancouver WA. Once you take the exit and go under the rail road bridge take a left (East). It is about a mile down on the right. If you pass the park or the Water treatment facility you have gone to far.
A few years back I launched my boat there and watched a mini van try launching a ski boat and the parking break slipped when the guy backed the boat off. The top of the mini van was all that was about visable.
