Who drew spring bear tags?
I know I did and so did Fish hunter. Pine Creek unit. Anyone else? They should have sent something out. You can't check controlled hunt results on the website yet.
Bear, turkey, springers, shad, oversize......the spring is already filling up.

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
Crashed and burned on the Pine Ck. Unit!! Birdhunter, you got my tags...give'm back   Spent much time there?? I have a buddy who lives in Halfway and works for USFS, I was planning on him tying one up for me if I had drawn.
Coot....you can go to the ODFW website, and check your tag status there:
https://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml...DrawQuery.html
I got the dreaded yellow card in the mail on Wednesday.

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
Sorry Rogue, my party didn't help your odds either . Just catching up on going 0 for 5 on OR tags in 2001. I plan to hunt at least four days in mid may. Will be out there with Nookie-Monster and his bro-in-law. My springs are getting as booked up as my summers and fall. Life is good.
I have a question for you spring bear hunters.
Have you ever seen a sow with cubs less than a year during the season Apr 15 to May 31? I've seen them with older than 1yr old cubs. They continue to hang around the sow another year unless she has more cubs. I've seen young cubs with the sow in July floating the Grande Rhonde and the appeared to be about 12" high at the shoulder at that time. How big were the cubs you have seen born the same year?

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
My partner and I drew for Lookout Mt. I haven't hunted in the spring there before. Last year I shot an average size, black, with chest blaze in the Desolation unit. It was the only bear we saw in 5 days. I think we might have gone a little early. Good luck to you all.

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
Well, I drew 712A (Trask-Wilson) . . . but, that's pretty-much a gimme . . . . 'put in for that one because my partner, Wayne may not be up to a longer trip or an overnighter by then . . . http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultim...;f=19;t=000012

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
Good to see you got a tag Cooter. My dad did too, so that's 3 for the party. Joey forgot to apply, but he still wants to tag along. I'll talk to you about dates later on. We're thinking late April, early May and doing a turkey trip one of the days too. Plenty of fishing to keep you busy too. Day or night.
FH - I've never seen any sows w/ little cubs. I don't think they're out and about too much that early. I've seen a few sows w/ yearling cubs, but that's it. Later in the summer you do see that years cubs, but I've never seen them while out spring bear hunting. I still watch them for quite a while before I think about shooting, but it is good to know that the odds are in your favor.
Rogue - My family has been going over to that area for over 20 yrs. Mostly for the deer or elk, but now we found an excuse to get over there in the spring as well. We usuall stay not too far out of Halfway, at Copperfield. I really love that country. Not too many places you can shoot a bear and a turkey, see hundreds of elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and catch steelhead, sturgeon, catfish, trout, crappie, bass and perch all in the same day!

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
I drew the Trask/Wilson. First time out for bear. Can't wait. Might end up solo-ing (not by choice), I can't let the tag go to waste. Either way, I am really stoked about getting out there. Been practicing with the call, got the rifle sighted in, need to ordered another box from 4-A's Ammo - - otherwise I am ready to go.

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
South Blues Baby!! Awesome tag if you got the spot! My brother and I drew it a couple of years ago and I spotted one the first day out--dead bear! Now graces my brothers wall. Last year a buddy of mine shot a cougar on the same hunt--lucky dog!
Crayfin......out

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
Alright guys, when do you all start your bear hunting. This will be my first year hunting them in Oregon (scored some private land access in the S. Blue's), but back when I guided in Montana, we never seemed to see a whole lot until around the 5th - 10th of May. Heard from an old-timer here in Oregon not to bother going out before May 8th. Any suggestions?

Re: Who drew spring bear tags?
This year I'd hunt early May. That's when we usually go. If it dumps a ton of snow, you can go a little later. If it's a really dry year, we usually go early. It depends what elevation your private land is. A lot of the bears in that area are following the new vegetation up. They'll be at one level one week and gone the next. Good luck.
