New rifle/scope
Finally decided after alot of looking around to go with a Sako Finnlight. It came up the best for me. Most other synthetics just didn't fit well. Went with the 270WSM. I had sold a couple of other rifles and had the bucks to go with quality optics as well. Considered Sworovski(?)and Zeiss, but really liked the new Leupold LPS in 2.5x10. 30mm tube and 45mm objective. Now if I could just draw an antelope tag or sheep or.....

Re: New rifle/scope
That will be a very effective Lope/Deer/Elk rifle - I've thought about getting a rifle in that cartridge for quite some time. The LPS scopes have probably matured finally, as there have been several versions. The first one quaranteed a huge amount of eye relief, but sacraficed the edge of the field of view. A friend of mine has one of the early ones and at high magnification the edge of the field of view was distorted - but it had the eye relief hands down.
I believe the current ones have gone back to a full clarity in exchange for that 3/4" of extra eye relief. I think the new variant is a much better scope and you will enjoy it I'm sure
Congradulations - Short and Fat gotta love them
A great site on Short Magnums is www.shortmags.org lots of good load data, reviews and forums

Re: New rifle/scope
Thanks. The eye relief is amazing. It seems that I can move all over the stock and still keep the full field of view. Don't notice any distortion at the higher numbers. At dusk it really seems to pull in the light as advertised. The question I do have is the sako mounts I used put the scope up higher(medium height mts.)than I'm used to having. It comes up great though at that heighth. Any inherent problems anyone has had with the scope not being as low as possible? I think the lo-mounts would still give enough clearance, just not sure if I really need to change?

Re: New rifle/scope
Congrats on the new gun. I too bought a 270WSM this winter(Browning A-Bolt). After owning a few guns including a 270Win I think this is going to be "The Gun" for me. I mostly archery hunt for elk these days, but when I draw my deer tag it is in an area that you need to be able to shoot 300+ yards or you could easily miss out on some nice bucks. I love the ballistics on the 270WSM and it is still fun to shoot. I also would be more than comfortable using it on elk if I do use a rifle again. I put a Leupold VX-III B&C 3.5-10 on it and it is ready for down range shooting.

Re: New rifle/scope
Here is a good test to see how well it all fits. With the rifle unloaded, shoulder it with the strap, close your eyes, unshoulder it, mount the rifle get into your standing shooting position, cheek on the butt stock and all - open your shooting eye. Where is the scope? Are you looking directly into it?
As far as being mounted with medium rings versus low rings - if that is what you needed to clear the action/barrel you really didn't have a choice. I like them as low as possible without touching the barrel. If they are two high will change the height above the bore and change its relation to the sighed point of impact to what degree. Good or bad - not sure anyone else?

Re: New rifle/scope
The objective lens has 3/8 or so of clearance. Its the manification adjustment ring that has only about 3/16 gap. Where I purchased the gun they were out of the low rings. We put the mediums on just to see how they fit and found the above clearances. I'll try your test later and see how that works. Thanks!

Re: New rifle/scope
I'm sure the issues have been delt with, but wasn't it the Sako/Finnlight that was recalled due to weak steel used in the barrels? Just a precaution, but I would check the numbers out and make sure this rifle isn't one of the ones in that lot,saw some realy nasty pics awhile back of one that blew apart and seriously injur'd the shooter.

Re: New rifle/scope
the 3/16th" is perfect clearence on the rear any lower and you can have problems,if you put the gun to your shoulder and do not have to search for the crosshair you are good to go

Re: New rifle/scope
I've been studying the ballistics of the 270WSM for the last couple of weeks and they are very impressive. I've shot a 7mm mag since 1986 and the 270WSM is really close ballistically. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any elk with a high quality 140 or 150 bullet. I've shot 6 elk with my seven and have only recovered one bullet. It went all the way from front to back of a spike bull, That's awsome. I usually shoot 160g nos. partitions. I've killed over 30 deer with it and always had total pass throughs. Mostly one shot kills. My next rifle will most likely be the 270WSM. Shoot straight! Kris.

You're not going to get that any closer - sounds high in the front but again due to the design of the scope - nothing you can do - happy hunting

Re: New rifle/scope
Wanafish....Sako is one of the best in the world, in my opinion, you made a very fine selection. I just havent kept up with the newer caliber selections they have now days. I am using my traditional 270, 243, 222 and 340 Weatherby. I would love to own a Sako.
