In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
Justed wanted to find out what most people use for king salmon out of the boat. Plunking q-fishes, alvins, spinners. As well I wanna catch occasioanl keeper sturgeon with it.
I have narrowed down my search to something in this range. Line 20-50, length ~ 9 ft, power- heavy. Not sure if it was overkill or not. Probably Lammiglass will be my choise.
I heard about Rainshadow blanks. Is there any in that "heavy" range?
I see all those sturgeon pics and seems that most of the people using salmon rods. Was wondering what king those are.
I do have 12-25 Lammi already, and got 38lb chinook above power lines on it, but it took me some time. With sea lions lurking in the water, more time in the water-more chances to donate it to them.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I have that rod. It's way down on the list when it comes to getting used.
Frankly for 60 bucks when they are on sale which is often - I prefer the Berkely 15-50 7'9" one piece. I don't know what it is about that little rascal, but it's a pretty sweet little stick. And then, if and when you bust it, you walk in and say 'Thank sir may I have another?'

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I have an 8', one piece rod rated for 12-25 that was designed as a heavy backbouncing rod. I find it incredibly versatile and functional and it's the first rod I put out for kwikies, keeper sturgeon or mooching. The first fish I landed on it was a 7' sturgeon. It was kind of funny as I had been talking with my partner that day about how neither of us had ever broken a rod while fighting a fish, so when Mr. Diamond sides broached, I decided to put the rod to the test. I doubled that stick up wrestling the fish to the boat. I have no complaints at all ... enough spine to handle big fish, enough flex and sensitivity to feel and handle smaller ones.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I have to go with the Berkley rods. I use the 7.9 one piece and I bought the 8 footer for the wife for sturgeon. Both are great rods. If I were going to use them for salmon I would go with the longer of the two. It has just a more sensitive tip on it.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I've used a Buzz Ramsey 15-50 9' for Sturgeon. Have'nt gotten any big ones with it yet but it seems to do pretty well. Have also brought in a few shakers on a 7'9", 10-20, one peice North River with no problems.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
the berkley air IM7 buzz ramsey 7'-9" 15-40lb.?
It's great for fishing kwikies and works great
on keeper gators. Too light for oversize though.
They also make a longer 2 piece version too I think. I have the one piece and love it!

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I have 2 Keni Specials that are 12-25 but they are a little light if you want to use 6 oz... for Sturg and diver fishing I prefer the "Salmon Moocher" by Lami, I think it is rated 15-30. Works great for keeper sized fish without giving up the feeling.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
Thanks for the replies.
I will most likely get this model rod-Lamiglas
Kenai Killer Cast Rod G1316-T and equip it with Shimano Tekota 600LC. Also after reading all good things about IM7 I'll have to get that as a back up.
But while searching, I have found out that this road have "strange" line rating. Let me explain.
In lamiglas catalog it says. G 1316-T 15-50lb.
In stores like FMS it rated 15-30, and seen 15-40.
I gave Lamiglas customer service a call, and been explained that at first the rod was rated at 15-30 but they underrated it and now after doing some tests, Lamiglas found it suitible for 15-50lb.
I have found that rod on sale for $140 which is lowest I have seen.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
Check out the WW Grigg GX902HC. 9', 20-50 rod, we use this for keeper sturgeon all the time. Plus it see's action as a Bouy 10 rod too.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I use both a Lamiglass 1308t "Salmon moocher" 15-30, its lighter and sensitivity wins over the Berkley Air IM7...
but if your not looking for the lightest rod yet a great feeling rod for the money then the Berkley AIR IM7 cant be beat in my opinion.
I second the 15-50 heavy Air IM7's the 7'9'' model for boat....Especially if you want a rod to be able to horse fish in a little faster without worrying...my Berkley feels more sturdy when loading up than the lamiglas..

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I was just up at Lamiglas Tuesday getting a new top section for my esprit(thanks again guys). I notice a Kenai Special they had there, believe it was 8’6”? 12-35 lb for $115. I asked them if it was a second and they said no it was just a discontinued model so it still had it's warranty. I would have snapped it up right then if I hadn’t just spent my rod money on a custom job from Zaq. Still might so better not give me much time to think about it and go back up there. You can’t beat that price and I could always use another rod..

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
A Rainshadow SW1087 makes for an awesome sturgie/fall nook (bobber or alvins) rod. The tip is light enough for the light biters and it has enough back bones Not sure how it would run kwikfish as I have not had the chance to try it yet. A Rainshadow HS1025 is a sweet spinner/kwikfish rod however.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I use loomis for springers, but bouy 10 and sturgeon fishing requires the old berkley 15-50, nice tip, lots of backbone.

Re: In the market for new Salmon/Strugeon rod.
I've got a couple of the Berkely 7'9" 15-50's. They're tough to beat. They work very good under a heavy load. I like the one piece for running divers at bouy 10 or at the CR. I also like them for running quickies.
Last year FMS had them for 38 bucks! Keep watching, they are on sale frequently either at Joes or FMS.
