Default deschutes river report

I drifted the pinetree to baevertail yesterday. It was so beautiful very green from all the rains the river is at a good level and clarity about 8+ feet. We got into 12+ fish even though the wind was gusting around 15 to 25. There were alot of bugs in the trees but a little to breezy to make it on the river. Counted a few steelhead. Green scuds, hares ear, copper john red body , pheaseant tails all about 8-14. Most were grabbed on the second dropper 10-14. Most fish were pretty deep 5-9 feet.

Thanks for the report. I'm looking forward to venturing over that way in a couple of weeks.

Headed to do the same drift the week after next. Thanks for the report. So can you still go after steel on the big D? I'm not sure of the regs....

I'm pretty sure that you can go after steelies on the D all year round. They may be getting pretty nasty though by now. They will be exhausted from spawning.

Forgot to mention that they will all be summer fish.

Yes you can and we did see a few and they were pretty haggered looking. But if the weather calms down it will just keep getting better.

Thanks Bro. Sounds like it was fun even in the wind.

Fished from Maupin to just below Pine tree Saturday and Sunday - picked up 5 trout, 2 smolts (doh! released very quickly) and 1 whitey ford. All three of us did get at least 1 fish in the 15-16 inch range,a personal record for all of us. All were caught on 16-18 princes/pheasant tails/flashback hare's, all fish were in deeper pockets of water (2+ feet as well). Fishing was best 11:30 to 4:30, regardless of whether it was sunny or overcast (both day's were different). Lastly, it was great to get a shot of warm spring desert sunshine after all this rain we have had in PDX the last several weeks...I can't wait to get back out there.

Tight lines,

Piscatus
