Re: NW Hunter TV show
I was an outfitter for fifteen years, and had the pleasure of doing a show with Rick Young and Fred Woods turkey hunting in Southern Oregon in 1997. They were a pleasure to hunt with, and were willing to work for the two toms we found (both DANDIES).
One of the highlights for me was the kill shot Rick made on a very large tom (10 1/2 inch beard with near 1 1/2 inch spurs) from about fifteen yards away. They showed it in slow motion, and he absolutely blew the feathers off of him. It was one of the few turkeys I have ever seen harvested that dropped stone dead, not even reflex flapping. For me, that is the indication of a clean kill, and demonstrates a hunters ability and skill. It's something to be proud of, not edited out, and hid from view.
Being the soft hearted guy I am (really), I hate to see suffering, and can understand editing out a less than clean kill--but I also hate to see them bow to the anti crowd and edit out all their kills.
Hunting is our heritage, and has been going on far longer than has the anti hunter hue and cry. While I don't like to see shows that revel only in the "kill" aspect, I dislike those that make hunting look as though it were some kind of sanitary, "wrap it up in butcher paper and take it home" sport. I sincerely hope they reevaluate their stand on this, and continue to show what hunting is really all about.
Peace, and happy hunting, WildHawg.
