Tuna Tunes?
I want to put some tunes in my boat for the long ride out to the ranch and Tuna Town. I'm lookin' at CD players and found one that I tink I'll buy from Boss Audio with a wired remote and antiskip stuff.
The question is about how far out I can expect regular AM or FM reception and what kind of antenna works best.
Speaker recommendations?
Let me know your experience.
Thanks

Re: Tuna Tunes?
Yeah...If you're going offshore for tuna you're best bet for a speaker is to have your VHF on and the stereo off!

Well then I guess you have never heard a VHF tranmission by NORTH RIVER DAVE! It is hard rock all the time on that boat. Mix that in with a good tuna bite and you dont need a radar to find him. The shear volume of sound will direct you to him.

Rick, I’m wanting to do the same thing. Where do you figure your going to put your speakers? I was thinking on the wall that separates the bow storage.

Re: Tuna Tunes?
Speakers - Nothing beats the Bose 151 "Environmental" speakers. These speakers spent many years being washed with Saltwater, sprayed with Tuna blood, and bashed by thrashing Halibut on the 'Pilar' and kept on working like new. They've been discontinued (in favor of a newer model with a sleeker design) by Bose, but you might still be able to pick some up (new, in the box) on ebay. That's where I got the set we just installed on the 'Kismet'.
For an antenna, we use one that tapes to the inside of the window. It's an adhesive strip. Works darn well and you don't have to deal with another eye-poker on the boat. Boaters World, $20 or something. Can probably get them elsewhere, that's just where we found ours.

Re: Tuna Tunes?
Bendman, I was thinking of flush mounting the reciever in the back of the glove box, and then have the remote over by the helm. I'm thinking of going with box speakers instead of cutting holes on the bulkhead. I'd like to experiment and see if the boxes would sound OK up under the gunwale on either side about mid-way back
OB, Thanks for the tip on the speakers I've always liked Bose but had no idea they made marine. The answer you gave on the antenna, strip vs. long standup thingy, is exactly what I was wondering about.
Anybody know how far out you can get reception?
Thanks,

Re: Tuna Tunes?
We put xm radio in the boat. CD's skip and get screwed up real easy. with 150 channels there is just about everything you could ask for. Just ask dave, we were cranking the tunes yesterday while we were bottom fishing. I bought some nice sounding dual cone waterproof speakers at boaters world for about $50.00

sorry, didn't answer that one for ya. Answer is it depends. If you're listening to a local Newport station, sometimes it's clear out to the pile.
Your results may vary (ours might, too... different boat - different configuration)

Re: Tuna Tunes?
Like Ocean Blue said, "Answer is it depends."
We have been on chicken ranch and had crystal clear reception from local New Port stations. It was a glass ocean with no wind day.
Peace, Tom

Re: Tuna Tunes?
MP3 player. No moving parts. Its a good thing.
Not sure about sat radio. Might be the shizzle.
I have a little cassette radio that safices on my boat. I was listening to FM all the way at the Tuna grounds last year.
