Re: Looking for a Lab
Don't need no classified ads. Got me a good lab who behaves herself in the house.
Still don't know how good she is on ducks or pheasants as my season got all messed up and I didn't get out as much as I hoped to. She does retrieve ducks.. not sure about knowing about pheasants. We're headed to a pheasant preserve somewhere around February 1st.
Now, one thing that she is good at. Found out last night she is a good possum dog. One was in the back yard and Echo ran right over to evict that intruder. Also found out possums don't take too well to getting whacked over the head with a shovel. Really makes them hiss and snap.
I suppose I should have done something BOE told about and caught that possum, shaved his back and painted his sides purple and gold (UW colors) and sent him on his way back home.
Instead I bounced a shovel off his head two times.

Re: Looking for a Lab
Pretty funny Zen I saw the poor dog at Christmas time, most of the hair has grown back but you can still tell where it was shaved.
I have been in close proximety a couple times chasing an opposum with a short piece of pipe. They can be a down right mean critter when you get them cornered and try to crack their skull.

Re: Looking for a Lab
This one didn't take too well to getting whacked on the head with a shovel. It was hissing and snapping after it came to. Even started rambling my way and I had to block it off with the shovel.
This wasn't the worst thing I ever did. Once I lassoed a porcupine and it's kinda like grabbing a bobcat by the tail. You don't want to let them get loose. I had a hard time trying to figure out how to turn the porky loose without having to kill it. I lassoed it for a funny picture.
I had to use a cleaning rod to get under the noose and lift it loose from the porky. It then headed off in the prairie. I did this on an eastern Montana antelope hunt in 1987.
Here's something strange. WA state has porkies on the protected animal list.
Also, I would never, ever consider shaving a porky.

Re: Looking for a Lab
Zen, if you need a training pheasant for the dog, I got a few in the freezer. It helps before taking the dog into the field. What is also sure fire is a wing clipped hen, let her run off in an open field for 10 seconds in front of the pup and let the pup go. Instant upland hunter

Re: Looking for a Lab
Pretty funny Zen, --- except that was probably some Kirkland condo residents 'pet possum'!!!!
Well in another 9 months Echo will whack them for you. My GWP (german wirehair pointer)gets a couple every year, I'm guessing they don't hold at point very well.
My neighbor up the street has a big male lab that averages 6-7 a year. That silly dog watches the Starlings eat his food but the possums, 'crunch'.
You might send 'em' to Dogfish to fry up with the diving ducks or for sausage.

Re: Looking for a Lab
Hey Baldpate Basher:
Or should I say just "bald basher"? Looks like your son cleared up the reason why you use Baldpate instead of Widgeon. It is self descriptive.
Good to see your son on here. BTW Pescador Welcome and enjoy! I can't wait for my dad to get a new 'puter so he too can join the fun.
