Default Hyper Lab

OK, first, I have no problem with Labs, I like them fine.

Here goes. I got home last night and there is this black lab running down the road, he follows my rig to the house. I pull in the driveway, here he comes. Fine, someones dog got loose. It happens. I grab him, nice looking dog, check his collar, get the phone number. No one home. I have to say that this dog was the most spastic lab I have ever met. Obvious he had not a bit of training for anything but barking at the neighbors. He was young, I'd guess maybe two, full grown, but barely. Jumping up at everything, running around, etc. So the address on his tag looks like its close, so I grab a leash and start walking so I don't have to put his hyper ass in my Jeep. This dog had never even seen a leash, I'm sure. He had no concept of how to walk without just pulling for all his might. Irritation number 1 -- dogs, especially sporting dogs, should know how to heel. Turns out I was mistaken, the street he lived on was not real close, so we would have to drive. So I put him in my garage for 5 minutes while I check the map. Irritation number 2 -- he ***** all OVER the garage. I get his feet cleaned and load him up. Irritation number 3 -- he immediately starts digging at the edges of the carpet in my cargo area, trashing what was left of already tattered carpet. Then he starts rubbing on the sides of the seats -- irritation number 4. Luckily, I was able to yell at him and stab the brakes enough to keep him from coming over the seat altogether, barely. So I drive in to his house, and put him in his kennel, which he obviously very rarely leaves, when up drives his owner, who was out looking for him (at least she was trying). I get a very terse thank you and she goes in the house with the kids. Irritation number 5. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper and I will think twice about taking anyones hyper ass lab in again. If they are calm, fine, if not, see ya. And if this dog ever shows up again he better just keep on running, before I call the pound.

Mostly just venting, but why the hell do people get active dogs like a lab and then not train them at ALL? My dog would never do anything remotely like what this one pulled, in fact, no dog I have owned behaved anywhere near this. Do people really think they can just buy a dog, leave it sit, and it will be fine? Dammit, buy a cat.

None of this was the dogs fault, it was the owners'. Maybe I should have shaved a stripe on him and painted him, or done it to his owner's.

Rant over.

Next time you drive by her house, drop off some info about the local 4-H dog clubs. They are free and maybe her kids will take a little intrest. The county extension agency can give you names and numbers. I take my son and his pup every week and it's great for both of them. Amazing what a little work will do for hyper out of controll dogs.
