I'd second that for Icom - I'm a ham radio operator (another expensive hobby) and Icom makes some of the best radio equipment I've ever used.

Good luck K7STW

I also have the ICOM M-88 and have been very happy with it. I did alot of research prior to deciding on that model. The rechargeable battery in the M-88 does not develop a memory (lithium ion I think), and holds a charge for much longer than they say it will. It's a small compact unit, that fits in your jacket well. It's submersible. Get the best now, or a couple years down the road, you'll be wishing you had.

Mine is a Standard Horizon. It has saved my bacon and I swear by it. It wasn't cheap but when I had to rely on it it worked. The day my main motor died in building seas 8 miles off Depoe bay and the main radio decided to have issues I would have about paid anyting. Looking back it was a small price to pay.

Icom. Mine works very well and is waterproof so when you are bobbing around in the water it will still work. This might be handy.

I have a fixed-mount Icom and agree they make great electronics. My handheld backup (and originally my only VHF) is a Uniden, and it also does very well. I've never "needed" it myself, but there was another guy a couple of years ago who was sure glad I had it. He was lost in the fog several miles off Eureka, and taking on water fast. His battery was already under water in spite of bailing full speed with a five-gallon pickle bucket. That little Uniden was enough to get the Coast Guard out there to him.
