Default Any one have kids hunting gear, used?

I have two boys and would like to get ahlod of hunting boots, clothing etc. They are 7 and 10 year of age. I don't have the money to buy the new gear so I'm just asking around. They both want to get out hunting. The water is just to deep for the short boots. One of them asked me why do you always come home with a lot of ducks when we don't go. I told him that it was because I don't take you when the weather is ducky. The reply was, what do you mean? The bottom line Son is you don't have the proper gear so you will keep dry when we are out. You can guess what followed that answer.

Thank you for hearing me out.

Fishalot I can relate. I have two boys also, they are 6 and 4, and both love to hunt and fish with me. My six year old is the size of the average 10 year old, and is growing like a weed. I have spent many a trip to various stores looking for quality kids gear. The dilemma is what to buy and how much to spend for something they are not going to be able to wear next year. Being the smart and ingenious man I am (don't ask my wife)I devised a 3 year plan for buying gear for my oldest boy that my youngest will be able to wear the following year.

For boots I would recommend one or more of three options. Cheap $20 rubber boots from Joe's. Cheap $30 hip boots from Fisherman's Marine, they go down to size 3. They are a little tall for kids, but will keep the water out. Another option is the kids neoprene waders from Herters, they are $79. They are hands down better and less expensive than anything else I have seen in either Cabelas, Mack's Prarie Wings or anywhere else.

For rain gear, Herter's has a kids PVC rain suit (jacket and pants) that is 14.99 at set. Buy two because little boys and blackberry bushes attract one another. Cabela's offers a waterproof/insulated water fowl jacket made of Cordura. It has their branded version of GoreTex (Dry Plus) in it and comes in Adv. Wetlands. They also have the same coat in "silent suede" fabric in either Mossy Oak Break Up or Adv. Timber. I bought this one for my oldest boy for Christmas. It will work great for duck/goose and deer and turkey. It runs $79. They also have matching pants.

I can appreciate you not wanting to spend any money on new stuff. By the time I outfit my kids, I have no $$$ left for my toys. I would recommend you check out the hip boots at Fishermans.

My two cents on the whole kids hunting gear scene is "why didn't I think of this!?!" Can you imagine an industry with a guaranteed 100% return customer base for 10-15 years! And this stuff is not cheap!

Anyone else out there, call me in two years and I will have enough gear to outfit any youngster between the ages of 5 and 10.

Hey fishalot!
I'm 16 and have been hunting for a while. I am not exactly sure what I have but I know I have a pendelton button up shirt that is very warm. I am positive i have other things, just give me an email. Since I live in portland part time you could come over and get it after I round it up.

Good topic.

I'm facing the same delema.

Got an 8yr old going on 24 and growing like a pro ball player.

Bought him decent boots, Columbia rain suit (on sale for 29.99) and he wears my old BDU jacket over everything when we get to where we are going. You can't see him unless he moves.

My wife made him a camo jackeet for Christmas out of Polarfleece. A matching hood with see through material to keep him warm. Found a pair of camo gloves for about $6 at Bimart on sale too.

I don't think we are going to have anybody left in the family to pass down stuff to and it is difficult to buy the spendy new stuff.

Any tips or used offers would b e welcome.

Fishalot-
Try REI-outlet.com they have good quality outdoor gear and if you keep checking back they can have some realy good deals. We have got several things from them. They do not have "hunting" gear but the stuff is good quality and works. Other than that G sales and cutting down bigger stuff has also worked. My sister goes to kids resale shops and consigns stuff. This a least lets you recover some of the cost after they grow out of it. Face it when kids are your priority new boots for the kids means dad will not be getting a new salmon rod or reloader or rifle or well you know what I mean. But I would not trade it for the world when my 2.5 year old holds up a flopping trout and says "catch another fish Daddy"

One more thing I just thought of. My mom and grandmother use to extend(sp) the life of my long sleeve shirts while I was growing up by cutting the sleeves at the elbow or forarm and then adding in an extention of 2 or 3 inches between the two pieces in a complimenting color. This would let me get a little more life out of a work or play shirt that fitt fine but was to short in the sleeves. I guess it could go the other way if the sleeve was to long also. Kinda goofy I know but It worked.
