Spending time with my daughter
I was tooling around in the shop this morning, organizing my tackle box, putting things away and I decided to tie up some additional jigs for upcoming trips. I was pleasantly surprised when my eight year old daughter decided to come out and spend time with me. I have really tried to encourage my kids in fishing and hunting as I believe in passing on the traditions taught to me by my father. My ten year old boy is already one of the best steelhead drift fishermen I know because I have taken time to encourage him.
On this morning, Courtney, my daughter wished to learn what I was doing. She was immediately charmed by the brilliant colors and wanted to jump in and start tying. I spent roughly ten minutes showing her how to start tying, add material then finish the jig off with a half hitch and some head cement. What came after that was incredible. She dove right in and started producing some jigs that I can't wait to try. I'm sure that we will soon take the next step where I can add her to the front of my drift boat where she will learn how jigs really work. She was as excited to tie jigs as I get when I land a big steelie.
Here is some of her work.
I would encourage all of you that have kids to get your kids involved and spend time with them. Some of my best memories are those of time set aside by my dad to teach me the outdoors. It is the only way we can keep our tradition alive and preserve the great privledges that we currently enjoy.

Bravo.
Today's cute kid making jigs, is tomarrow's voting public, congress member, F&W Biologist, and insurance of a fishing legacy to hand down.

Re: Spending time with my daughter
I give you a heads up on that one . You did a awesome job. Tell her I said, "those are beautiful jigs". I hope she catches her first fish on one of those.
My encourager to fish was my hubby  . I still look at him for advise on different ways of fishing.
Great Job.

That is neat! I do not think we see enough of our children or wives geting into the sport of angling. I am all for it. My lady is a fair wether fisher lady olnly, but she will go when the sled with a heater comes into play.

Re: Spending time with my daughter
way to be a real father, it's great to see people taking time for their kids, i can't wait until my daughter is old enough to take on the river! some of my best memories are of my dad taking me and my sister out with him and him spending a lot of time and patience with us on the water and in the field. great job man and keep up the tradition!

Re: Spending time with my daughter
This is a great post. Those are some beautiful jigs. I have been tying jigs for years and mine don't look anywhere near as nice as those. They are guaranteed fish catchers.

Re: Spending time with my daughter
That's pretty cool Onemovecharlie.
Unfortunately My dad was a workaholic and he never spent the time taking us fishing.
I had to pretty much learn to fish and hunt on my own which was a chalenge growing up in Southern California.
He did take us to the High Sierra's a couple times when I was a little kid though and like you said, those are the memories to cherish and even though I don't remember much from 40 years ago, I still remember those as if it were yesterday.
Tell your daughter I said those are some pretty jigs and I can tell just by looking at them that they are going to catch some steelhead.
Good job!

Re: Spending time with my daughter
Thanks for the kudos guys. I posted because I was so proud of her not because I thought I was doing something neat. I have had several employees like the person who is asking for help with fishing tackle to get someone started and it all boils down to quality time. When you get them out on the water and encourage them, the threat of disappointing someone or measuring up can disappear. It's because of how much time my father spent with me giving me self esteem, that he was always the first person I'd ask to fill a seat in my boats.
