Walleye fishing at Rufus !!!!!
I had a great time at Rufus . I fished by myself on Friday and the wind howled with gusts up to 40 mile an hour . I am thankfull that I have a seaworthy boat made for that kind of water . I didn’t catch any Walleye’s on that day . It was hard to get the boat tied to the dock by myself . I was having trouble keeping my hat on so I through it in the bottom of the boat on the carpet . I loaded the boat on the trailer and drove to camp . When I put my hat on it was a shock . It couldn’t have gotten any wetter if it had landed in the water . The carpet was wetter than I though . Saturday J.D.Smallie joined me and I caught an 18”and a 21 ½”Walleye . J.D.Smallie didn’t catch a fish . Sunday was a different story . I didn’t catch a fish and J.D.Smallie caught the first Walleye at 16” , then he hooked a big fish . At first I though that it might be a Sturgeon . It turned out to be a walleye that was to long to measure on my concaved ruler that is mounted on my boat . The ruler goes to 30” . We weighed it on a certified scale at 13.48 pounds and it was
33 ½” long . What a fish . We also had a bald eagle land close enough to get some good pictures . One of the members of the Oregon Bass And Panfish Club Landed 8 Walleyes for 3 people fishing on Saturday . Most of the Walleye’s were caught in 20 to 40 feet of water . We caught the big one in 20 feet of water on a Chartreuse Gitzit with a trailer hook and night crawler . We used Whistler Jigs and bottom walkers with different colors of green . All in all it was a good time made better with a good friend J.D.Smallie .

I'll be darned, with all the hoot and hollering I thought it was a HUGE sturgeon too. I was accross the river from ya and did not pay much attention. Nice fish guys . We will definitely have to hook up. My brother and his wife landed 9 for the weekend and me and my 9 yr. old twin boys landed 4, or should I say my boys landed 4, I did not get a fish on Sunday (would of had a couple more, but somebody forgot the NET!!) NOT MEEEEEEE... yeh

What a great day!!!

Only been up there onec on our own. We went with Touche the first ime then got brave last year and went on our own. best eating fish there is. You talk about putting the boat on the trailer and going back to camp. Do you put in on the Or. side then stay at Maryshill park. Can you put in at the park and fish the river with a Or. liscense? Really getting anxious to get back up there.

Re: Walleye fishing at Rufus !!!!!
Shalom, Where did you camp at? Did you use the free areas at the gravel bars or the regular camp sites closer to the dam (Giles Park?)? I'm thinking of doing next weekend there. I may have an open seat. Lower Columbia Walleye Club is doing an outing there Saturday, but I can't make it due to family commitments.

Re: Walleye fishing at Rufus !!!!!
As you cross under the freeway, going towards the ramp area at Rufus, turn left (west) by the old abandoned RR tracks. There is a gravel road that that heads down aways. I think there is even a porto-pot down there. there is usually some RV's down there. Sometimes windsurfers use it. You can see it from the freeway as you are approaching Rufus from the west.
I think you can plunk for springers off the bank there in May. I've seen the Indians catching them there.

Re: Walleye fishing at Rufus !!!!!
There is great access to the bank. i can't speak for your success chances. It never hurts to try. I do see some guys banking there off the rip-rap. Try drift fishing a worm and a slinky steelhead style. You might try using the Gulp worms as they are pretty tough.
