Default rifle rust

I have a A-bolt 30-06 that I shamefully didn't dry off after beating the brush last year. I even went so far at to leave it in it's case wet for about a week. Of course, the barrel has pitted and I have rust spots on the outside of the barrel. The inside is fine, I did run a patch through it, just didn't wipe it down.

What is the best way to remove the rust without hurting the rest of the blueing (sp?)

Thanks,

FOR SHAME!!!

(yeah, like I've never done that)

The best way I've found to get rid of rust that forms on the outside of OTHER peoples guns is good old 4D-40. Just give it a healthy spray and wipe away with a cotton cloth. May have to repeat a few times. Always has worked for me, but then again I'm not too preoccupied with keeping my gun immaculate.

Someone else must know the "proper" method of cleaning rust off a rifle.

Try www.robarguns.com and forget rust forever. I have their Rogaurd coating on one of my rifles and the stuff is incredibly tough. I've hunted from a backback for a week in the snow and rain and came home with rust free rifle. Little spendy, but well worth the money.

I got some stuff like steel wool from a gun nut friend. Don't know what its called. It is a lot coarser than wool and will not scratch blueing. Wd-40 and this stuff has worked well for me.

I have heard that using penil lead works well on rusted 'Blued' areas. The lead is just abrasive enought to remove the rust, but will not further damage the surface of the barrel.

Try FLITZ. It comes in a tube like toothpast and will usually take of all rust with the exception of deeply pitted spots. It's a little spendy but a tube will last for years.
