Default How are the crops holding up?

I was wondering for thouse of you that hunt privat clubs, how is the foul food holding up? I get a little worried when the water floods the later season food crop areas. The tied corn is taking a pounding from the weather, yet it is still looking good. I don't see much of it getting ate yet. How are thing looking for your spot?

Fishalot, our flooded buckwheat is all done. And the fieldcorn which is about 25 acres has not been touched. The westside clubs with all the sweetcorn they planted are taking a pounding by the birds and the guys are pounding the birds. We did it wrong again.... nextyear we will sweetcorn the lakes like they did. They have just left us a handful of tailfeathers by comparison. Our buckwheat was nightfeed for the birds and they didn't show up until about 10 min after hours. Then of course it looked like bees sworming. You would think we could outsmart them once in awhile.

Bigshark I have been told by the THE MAN SPADA that you have to plant sweet corn in the first 3 or 4 rows. We didn't fallow his advice, yet we are still getting a good number of birds. We might have done better if we had maybe next year.

Fishalot, the two guys that are worth listening to about such matters are Ron S. and Wally R. With the production they get it has to tell you something. Wally told us and Ron did too. We didn't do it right. Got a wild hair to plant the sweetcorn up high away from the water so it would last longer. Dumb Dumb Dumb

OK fishalot, your current crop scheme is working quite sweetly for you, especially when 2/3 the time your coming home with limits. Our corn is gonna fall a little at a time for the rest of the season, we even have millet that the ducks are just now finding in the corn. We got wet corn, dry corn topped corn, strung corn, strong corn, weak corn, 30 degree corn 45 degree corn, it's one beautiful mess. The only thing I would change is getting back to the 4-5 eared variety instead of this 1-2 eared stuff the farmer had layin' around.

We solved the problem of the birds eating the crops too soon, don't leave enough for them to eat.
Actually the birds, both geese and ducks have been coming in to corn stubble and sheet water.Won't support a lot of hunters but it's been consistant.
Dave Meyers(sp) used to plant indian corn and they shoot over 500 ducks on his lake, said it holds up longer than sweet corn.
