S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Here's the scoop....Looks like April 23rd is going to happen for a few of us. The weekend has the following events already planned for Englund Marine's Fishing Exposistion held this weekend, and we're going to piggyback on the event so to speak. The Expo typically has semiars for most of the day about every type of fishing you can imagine on the Oregon Coast. Several guides go over salmon fishing in the bays and salt, bottomfishing tactics, halibut, and of course tuna. Local fishing boats are on site and rigged for the various styles for people to see, booths are open purely for asking questions (no soliciting typically), and tons of things going on. Englunds is located in Charleston and right on the main drag. I'll give directions later. Multiple opportunities exist for people wanting to bring families. Kids are welcome at everything, probably with the exception of the evening festivities and adult beverages being present.
This can be as simple as a get together after the days events at englunds, or we can have our own makeshift simple seminars for salty dogs in particular. Either one works for me. If we know how many people are definitely coming I can start helping accomodations. Which include the following establishments.
The Mill Casino (probably the nicest and moderately priced)about 49-79/night
Edgewater Inn (Nice and also Moderate pricing)
Timber Inn (average)
Motel 6 (average)
There's also a motel in Charleston for those interested.
I'll probably ask for some help in arranging things due to the things mentioned previously if this turns out to be a definite go......So lets here it.
:lurk:

Portlander? Portlander??? You better ask Corrirod how well I get around in Portland.
I'm a Sweet Homer. Four stoplights. 7,010 people. Ahhhhhh.
But count me in. I really want to get down and meet the gang down there.

I'll be there. This will be my first TA meeting and I'm marking the calendar now. I'll be inviting another fisherman also, so count this as two attendees.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
 Count me in.
One nice thing about the Mill Casino is that they have a parking lot the size of a Walmart, very friendly to boat parking. I believe they have an all-night security patrol also, which should make the guys pulling boats down sleep a little easier. I think they allow you to park and sleep in your RV for free (no hook-ups though). There is also an RV park with full hook-ups in Charleston a stones throw from the ramp, if anyone is interested.
I like the idea of piggy-backing (leeching?) off the event already planned. They are very professional presentations put on by extremely knowledgeable folks. Do you have an idea of what time they might start this year? What did you have in mind for the evening festivities? Are we talking Friday or Saturday night? Where, when? I realize we probably won't know until we get a head count. I'm open to anything that has a decent selection of adult beverages.
What about fishing? I think for myself it would be a little hard to get a trip in on Saturday morning and make it back with enough energy to hit the seminars at Englunds (depending on what time they start). I've got Friday's off, so weather permitting I'm thinking Friday and/or Sunday. More than happy to lead people down to the bottom fishing spots I know of.
PS: Congrats on the baby, TC

TC Waiting to here back from Frogpond with the idea of showing up provided the following happens. My son can make the TA evening events and the ocean is fishable. Any chinook being caught?

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
I can't commit yet, but will more than likely be there with my father and son. Son is going to be home for a couple of weeks from the Navy starting the 13th, and my dad is flying out from Wyoming to spend a week fishing the coast with us. My plan was to spend a couple of days on the Lower Umpqua / Winchester bay Sturgeon fishing, then fill in the nicest days on the salt out of charlston bottom fishing (assuming we have nice days by then). If the ocean does lay down any time that week (18th-23rd) anyone want to show me some good close bottomfish spots out of either charlston or winchester? I managed to make the recent TA meeting in Portland, and I must say that it was a great event. I think it would be nice to make this one to catch up with some of the folks that live a little closer to home (klamath falls). See ya there.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
I don't know much about the casinos or the location of the expo, but I do know that it's all too easy to pick a place that looks good, only to find there's so much going on that it's hard to mingle and chat. Sometimes it's hard to bring stuff in, like rods, reels, rigs, etc, and talk about how you set 'em up and use 'em. And like Northriver1 says, we've got to think about the kids too. I wouldn't love this sport so much if my dad hadn't taken the time to drag me around and make sure I was always a part of the big adventure. (thanks, dad)
It doesn't take a big place or a fancy one, just a few table and chairs and maybe access to some brews or soft drinks. The fun is getting to know each other and the entertainment will be sharing what we each know.
I'm getting pumped.

I'll make every effort to be there on the 23rd and I'll see if I can talk a few of my fellow "Baja Oregonians" into joining me. I am sure if Whaler-Man-Onokai-Mark is not at a show, he'll be there as well. Sounds like a ton of fun. Bob

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
There haven't been many salmon reports just yet due to the weather. But last year it was really hot early, my guess was mostly springer fish headed to the umpqua. But they should be there. It's all about the weather this time of year.
Tell frogpond to bring his hiney down here pronto. Besides, he's going to need a few hopps and barleys to rejuvinate the braincells after the test he's taking. Anyone have any good ideas on after hours locations for the get together? I'm racking my brain to think of some good meeting sites. I'm all ears.....

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
These dates are very bad for me > That said there is a chance I'll make it. I'm leaving for the other side of the world for 5 weeks the very soon after this TA meet. I'll try but this may be a tuna dream. I'll make the hotel reservations. There is also a Best western in town I've stayed in with the boat before a tuna run.I really would like to meet some fellow Dogs.Mark

I am out on this one . I have a must do obligation on the 23rd. Oh well. Maybe next year. I'm also missing the humboldt tuna area meeting this year. Darn. I hope I don't miss the season. I can make it -I think I can- only 2 more months and change. Mark

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Holy hell, it's been a crazy week. Sorry for dropping the ball a bit with information but my wife had an emergency c-section last thurs. and the new baby had to be transferred to the Sacred Heart NICU being a pre-me. So my last 5 days have been a blurrr, but evening out now and I'll start calling places today and get a time and place worked out. Because of the latest events and things being so hectic with my father and I, we will not be giving the seminar on the tuna fishing at Englunds. 5 star charters will be giving the presentation, however if people want, we can do some things at the TA meeting as well, and be a bit more personal. Anyhow, that's the scoop and update on the planning.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Oh man, TC, don't worry about a TA meeting at a time like this! You've got plenty (!) on your plate. Just concentrate on your wife and baby.
Certainly hope everything goes well, and remember, I'm up in this neck of the woods, so if there's anything I can do, I'm counting on you to let me know. That includes a place to stay and/or a friendly face to talk to at the hospital, or anything else you or your family might need. Seriously.
Please keep us informed - you've got a lot of friends out there sweating you through this.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Actually, the baby (girl) and mom are doing great at this time, so things are starting to come to even keel you might say. So my worries with that situation is minimal, knowing the kind of care I've seen and know she's getting. The baby should be home by the weekend. I'm going to call a couple of motels and places to hold the event, how does 6:30 pm sound for a get together? I'll see if we can manage some group discounts for everyone. I'll bring the cigars!
And for everyone that's extended a hand to help we appreciate the offers. My wife is with little Avery and has a place to stay in eugene currently, so everyone is doing very well at this time. That may change when I'm asked to change a diaper however.

Ah, it's been a long time since I changed a diaper. Don't worry about it, you'll get the hang of it quickly. It's not difficult, much easier than putting a tuna rig together! We hope your wife and baby get home soon.
You'll likely notice a change in your behavior, responsibility for a little one will do that to you. Don't worry, it's a good thing when that happens.
take care

TC-
Congradulations
Glad to hear everything worked out, that must have been pretty scary for awhile. Let me know if we can be of any help.
I thought I knew what tired was until I became a parent I didn't mind the diaper changing so much as the lack of sleep.
If anyones interested, here's a link to a flyer for Englunds event: Link To Englund Flyer
Looks like a lot of good topics.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
I'm working on hotels for everyone, but another question came to light. Where would you rather have the get together? More of a bar scene and adult beverages, or there's a great pizza place that we could reserve half of it for everyone, including families. Small kids running around with fish hooks may cause a problem, but for the most part would be more open to everyone. Let me know.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
OK. I'm committing. I'll be there with my son and pops (see previous post). However, my commitment is only good so long as we hold it somewhere that an 18yr. old is welcome. I only get him for 10 days or so, then he's back to the Navy. I can't see myself leaving him in a hotel and going out for a beer without him when I haven't seen him for 6 months, and won't again for probably another six or nine.

My party of three won't need a motel and the pizza place sounds good as it will accommodate those with young folks and the adults will be able to enjoy a brewski.
We plan to spend the day at Englund's and the evening with TA on Saturday. My partners will not be able to spend the night.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Ok, due to party scheduling and that the pizza place will only allow parties from 7:30 until 10 pm we've put our name on it for saturday night at Molly's Pizza in Coos Bay. We have half of the pizza parlor reserved for us on the big screen side of the resteraunt. I'm still trying to touch base with the gal at the Mill Casino to see if we can get some cheaper reservations, so I'll let everyone know when I do if you need a room. I'll post directions to everything mid-week when I get the time to sit down and type it.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
A picture is worth a thousand words:
Englunds/Charleston coming from the North: Turn right on Virginia (second light, this is Cape Arago Hwy). Turn left on Broadway, right on Newmark.
Englunds/Charleston coming from the South: Left on Ocean Blvd., there are a bunch of signs for the state park.
Molly's is at 4th & Golden.

The idea is to be there with Bobber_Boy. Now lets hope for a nice ocean to play on.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Is anyone planning to fish on Saturday? I am new to Coos Bay and would love to buddy boat with someone. I was thinking if the weather is as good as they say, I would try Salmon. Last report seems to indicate that fish where caught 12 NM West of Bandon, which would be about 18NM on a 218 from CB. Could someone tell me what the typcal heading is from CB when running for Salmon.
Thanks, Alex
Congradulations on the new born I-Fisher.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Sadly, something's come up last minute for me on Saturday, so I'm out. I still may make it down on Sunday for some fishing, wx permitting.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Well I'm about a 50/50 chance of making it due to the new baby being still in Eugene. There's a chance she'll be discharged tomorrow, but I'm not sure. I mentioned leaving tomorrow for the TA meeting and I think the response wasn't good. I'd probably be shopping for a lawyer if I did.
The ocean report yesterday wasn't bad, but not flat either. I do know some boats went out to fish both salmon and bottomfish, but didn't get a report on how they did on salmon. For those of you wanting to bottomfish, get outside of the jetties and go directly south. Right away you'll see the lighhouse and off the tips of the rocks isn't a bad spot, but overfished. Keep heading south another three miles and you'll see a large outcropping of rocks called simpson's reef. Anywhere around there look for fish on the finder and you'll find your limits. I'm sure there will be other boats down there too. The crabbing has been good in the bay also, so there's a lot to do. I know people have been catching a lot of lings inside the jetties along the N.Side recently also. There are pinkfin perch around large structures too such as channel markers and upriver towards the bridges. I wish I could meet everyone, and it might still happen. If you hear me on channel 19 vhf anytime on saturday or sunday hollar at me.

Re: S.Oregon TA Meeting.....Who's Coming?
Well, no babies for me, but I too have a relative in the hospital and I will be somewhere between Sweet Home and Good Samaritan in Portland this weekend. Not what I wanted to do, but important stuff just the same.

WTG-
I think TC said we've got it (Molly's) for 7:30. I plan on showing up @ 6:30 to get some pie with the family.
Dave-
She looks so happy and smiley in the pic you posted  It's not the sneaking out that's hard, it's the sneaking back in

I'm disappointed to say that I've got to work tomorrow and Sunday. I was looking forward to my first TA meeting. :depressed:
