Default Bad Math? Bad Logic?

So for quite a few years now, 2nd season Saddle Mnt. elk has been undersubscribed.During this 9 day season, they had offered about 1,600 tags, but only about 800 hunters apply for that unit. So you would assume that their bull harvest rate would be about half of what they had anticpated and project, annually. Starting this year they have shortened the season from 9 days to 7 days, supposedly to ensure a 20/100 bull/cow ratio. However they still offer 1,680 tags!

I would think that the low %50 tag subscription would have already taken care of the harvest equation. A 7 day season only gives a 'workin' man' two days to hunt.

The number of tags and applicants did change this year…

E-mail information from ODFW’s Anna Pressentin regarding 2001 controlled hunt applications

“For both Saddle Mountain hunts, the Commission authorized 1667 tags. For the first one, 3017 people put the hunt down as one of their choices. For the second, 2846. As a result, 1667 tags were drawn for both hunts” (date:June 25th, 2001)

The other thing to consider is that this was the first year for “first come first serve” on un-issued tags. On July 1st of this year hunters could buy any un-issued tags on top of other elk tags received. So it was possible that had they not lowered the number of tags and shortened the season too many elk would now be harvested. (I also heard a rumor that a lumber company was unhappy about the extra hunters hunting in that area if everyone bought up 2nd elk tags but I do not think this was the reason)

I think longer seasons would be better. These short hit or miss seasons put too much pressure on hunters to perhaps take inappropriate shots and only wound the elk Two weeks with three weekends would take the pressure off and make for a more enjoyable hunt.

OUCH…

Now that hurt… (he,he)

Not smarter, this is perhaps a topic that contains less contentiousness than many of the issues surrounding salmon and salmon restoration. Or you are perhaps more open-minded with regards to hunting

See, I also keep up on hunting issues as well…

OK, It does make sense to lower the days if the unit is fully or over subscribed. I was going by the stat.s in the new 2002 Hunting reg.s pamphlet that showed only 50% of the tags being purchased.Maybe your info. is more recent then what was published in the ODFW reg.s.

Thank goodness we got to hunt last week! It is nasty out there nowadays!
