1st trip to Pyramid
Was passing thru Reno area on my way north and couldn'nt resist giving it a try. (I just happened to have my 8 wt. with me. This picture was taken on the morning of 3/24-north side of the hatchery. The fish is 21-22 inches--about average. Some were chunkier than others. My biggest was a meaty 23 incher. Not non-stop action but pretty much everybody was catching. Good thing this was'nt a river or these fish would have used the current to their advantage. Anybody notice the dry line in the photo?

Sounds like a good day. A bend in the rod is always nice.

Re: 1st trip to Pyramid
Bigger and better fish are available the further away you get from the " nets ". Looks like your right in them. 8+ pounds is my best at Pyramid. I hope to get in touch with a 10 lber this year. Yesterday it was snowing at Pyramid Lk. YIKES ! For those of you who are now hot to go remember that the fight these fish put up will be the least memorable of all Trout species. But they are pretty. Pretty dumb too .

LOL...yes...there are no big fish at the "nets"...LOL LOL.
Almost every spawning fish is cruising by the nets right at this very moment...even the big boys...You would have the best chance of catching a big fish at the nets right now, and if you don't believe me just go to the fish ladder(right next to the nets) and take a look down in the water, you will find hundreds of cutthroat over 10 pounds...
Dumb Fish???? not those cutts my friend.

Re: 1st trip to Pyramid
Tanner,
It appears as though they are combat fly fishing, but I assure you they are not. They always space out so that noone is crowded...but when you get a bg fish on it can be quite interesting watching people move their ladders out of the way of a big fish.

Re: 1st trip to Pyramid
No combat flyfishing here--nice folks on those ladders. I can see where one could say these fish are "dumb" BUT you still have to work for them. At certain times of the year, 50-60 fish days can be expected----if you have paid your dues and LEARN when to be there. I'm pretty sure Chrome Mandinga and Ssteelheadsteve have put in their time learning this fishery--and for every 10 times they did good ,there was a time or two when the "catching" could have been better. By the way---My expertise here comes from talking to the locals putting their time in on the laddars. I haven't paid my dues yet. A lot of these guys are really focused. Fish--go relieve yourself back at the shore--Fish--get a quick bite to eat or a few swallows of coffee--Fish--"Aww heck with it--I'm gonna go in my waders cause I might miss a fish". Bottom Line------I'm going back for more!!

Re: 1st trip to Pyramid
Yes I have paid my dues many times over...I have had many many fishless days in the freezing cold...wind blowing 60mph into your face...
50-60 fish days are only when the fish are spawning...that is some incredible fishing.
I used to have to be to work by 10, so I would be in the water before you could see your own hand in front of your face...guys will wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning, walk out and put their ladders up to reserve the good spots...
Every year I see the same guys fishing. People come from all over the world to fish for these beautiful fish...I have met guys from sweden, australia, brazil and many east coasters...It really is an outstanding trout fishery.
We got so much water this year that it should be an excellent year for spawning...I am excited to see derby dam coming down...that will mean that you will be able to catch these big fish in the truckee river...the truckee is maybe 3/4 the size of the wilson when the truckee is full. hooking a 15lb cutt in a small river will be so much fun!

Re: 1st trip to Pyramid
You know it !! I have a couple thousand ladder hours at that lake. While the nets are a good spot, we fish a couple places at the south end of the lake where its all by your lonesome. However.. as combat as it might seem, I have meet some really cool folks down at the nets.. people that I fish with to this day. Its different for sure. If you think those fish don't fight wait until you catch a big one.. they fight pretty good.. I love that lake. Its been really good to me over the years. Those fish are pretty as anything you will ever see. I could go on forever about it and you have heard all my B.S before so I'll let it go at that.. Don't knock it till you try it

Aren't these fish the same strain as the trout in Mann lake?
