Default Any Sauvie Island (Public) Reports?

The "Hole-in-the-Head Gang", me, Flathead and Skinball want to whack some dux this weekend but we are undecided at the moment on where.

Sauvie seems to have its days but the latest results are from Monday. Is the water coming up in the roam units?

went out there wednesday to the Eastside Non reservation line. Was in line pretty late, but still got a draw. Ended up in Mcnary.

Not much was flying - saw 2 small flocks before shooting. A few teal buzzed me early, but didnt get a shot off, and had one shot at a greenhead at mid morning. All in all very slow, and by the sound of it, not many others were doing a whole lot better.

Cold weather this weekend and storms are supposed to bring in some new birds.

Watch the tides for the units outside the dike, as water levels are still below normal for this time of year. On the eastside, inside the dike, they been pumping, so water situation is OK.

fish forever,

Thanks for the update. Yeah no kidding it was slow. Just pulled up the results for Wednesday and by the looks of it, it would have been a better day to watch paint dry.

Boy, what an ugly day for us on Sunday. It put the "Ugh" in "Lee".

To start with, we let ole Skinball drive, it should be noted that we were towing my sled too. First he tries to get on the freeway by using the exit ramp. Then after considerable ridicule, he attempts to take the I-205 exit off of I-84. He's only been to Sauvie a hundred times before. I guess he had his head up and locked. We arrive in the sweat line clear back by the barn. I guess we should have dragged our tired rearends out of bed a little earlier. The gomer in front of us decides to take an extended nap while the line keeps on moving. Finally he wakes up and we get to the check station to find out that all of the Malarky hunts have been taken. Nice... so we take what is left of McNary. Did I ever mention how much I can't stand McNary? We motor up the Gilbert River and find a spot that we can all get out of the boat, Skinball jumps out of the boat and procedes to attempt a gainer with a full twist, right there in the mud. Flathead and I are laughing so hard, we almost throw up . We set up in some standing water that probably hasn't been hunted over this year and only 3 birds give us a serious look, before continuing on. After that we head back to the check station and grab some Deadwillow tags. Two birds give us a look there. Of course we didn't see this guy that was set up on the other side of this patch of corn. His calling sounded like an asthmatic duck or a duck that was laughing. (If any of you were that guy, sorry, but it was kind of funny) With fun meters pegged we decide to call it a day. No birds, but we didn't want to screw up the average anyway!

One thing that has always amazed me is why ducks like to fly down the middle of the "Shooting Gallery" i.e. Mudhen. Man if those guys aren't blasting away when the birds are too far out, they are blasting away with their calls.

The eastside units like Hunt, Deadwillow, Footbridge are looking pretty pathetic this year. They sure could use some more water. Sounded like the guys on the westside had a pretty good shoot though.

Hind sight being 20/20, probably should have gone east and taken advantage of the snow. Hopefully the weather will keep up and bring those northern birds down.

Can't wait for December!!!!

Last Saturday 11/17 in Malarky: I got 4, My buddy got 3 and his dog got 3.
Last Wednesday 11/21 in Malarky: I went 3 for 3 before the birds decided to stop flying for the day.
Friday 11/23 in Rentennar: 0 for 2 on Teal.

My buddy got 5 on Thursday in the North Unit, 5 on Friday afternoon in Mudhen and 1 in Hunt yesterday.

An interesting note, I have shot two Gadwall in the last week and have never shot one out there in the last 4 years. Any body else see any around?

I shot one earlier this year down south. I think Baldpate Basher killed 2 a few weeks ago at Sauvies. I usually get a couple each year, but this is a little early compared to when I normally start to see them. Go figure.

Looks like Malarky and Aaron are shooting pretty well. must be a bunch of teal out there like last year at this time. Johnson has had a few good days but other than that everything else has been pretty inconsistent. We are heading back out on thurs. Hopefully things will change by then and the birds will be everywhere  Sauvie Island hunt results

Nice post MoJet. It pretty much depicts the flavor of the day. Meaning, I guess I better stop at the store and pick up some chicken for dinner after I get done hunting Sloppy Island.

The "Half Gainer with a Twist" Skinball did rated a perfect 10 by the way.

Lured In,

I've shot a couple of gadwalls there over the years. A onesy-twosy type of thing. I've seem more off the freeway ponds around Boardman. Usually I'm on a goose mission there, so I haven't shot any in that neck of the woods.

At one time I had read that gadwalls were making a good comeback despite the decline in pintails. They did not state, however, which flyway this seemed to be happening in. I suspect it was the Mississippi flyway.

One other reason not too many get shot, may because of a case of mistaken identity with a hen mallard. The white speculum, one would think, would be a dead giveaway except at altitude. It sure is easier to see the white in low light conditions.

Hunted hunt Blind 8 today, the birds were lucky we couldnt hit anything. We did manage one greenhead and missed the other half a dozen chances we had. Not a great shoot by any means.
If anyone has Johnson reservations they ought to get out there. They have been knocking the hell out of the Mallards out there. Talked to the check station when we came in and he had just been out talking to a buddy of his in Johnson 2 and they had 19 greenheads and missed 8 others while the odfw guy( I am tired and can't remeber his name at the moment) was there, three guys. Been hot shooting lately out there. Gay lake shot well today also.
