Default Electronic calls for bear?

I just bought an electronic game call at Bi-mart. It was $20. Wondered if anyone had any luck calling in bears or cats with one. It is a Cass Creek brand. It has jack rabbit, cottontail, coyote howl, pup yips and fawn distress. I bought it mainly for the fawn distress.

Bears will tend to hang up about 75-100yds. out. Not a problem if you are in a tree with a rifle.

But do the electronic calls work on them?

I had a Carlton video of calling in bears. It works, sometimes at close range too.

Actually he said that was a key, you pretty much had to spot a bear, get within like 100 yds then call them in. Didn't always work, but when they came, they came runnin.

BTW, it was ALL in the fall. I recall hearing it doesn't work on spring bears unless you can buy a call that sounds like wounded Dandelions or Skunk Cabbage. Spring bears typically are eating greens.

I do have a cassette tape of black bear cub in distress that might be cool. Got it from my Dad. He never really tried it, I never have either.

Question: Is it legal to use an e-caller on bears? I know you can use them on yotes and crows, but I'm not sure about bears (or cats).

I couldn't find anything that said if they were legal or illegal. So I assume they are legal.

I couldn't find anything in the regs that said one way or another either, so I asked a local game officer and was told you can use an electronic caller on anything except waterfowl.

Electronics are illegal for all birds except crows. For everything else, they're OK.

This is accurate information...Bears are more prone to respond to a call in the fall.

when the calves and fawns are dropping the bears will come into a fawn in distress, some times like ringing a dinner bell. so yes calling bear in the spring works, very good if the sent of afterbirth is on the wind.try a crow call the birds are ringing the dinner bell everytime they start squabling over the carrion.

So I can use them for elk too? Hmmm, I did not know that.

Just answered my own question: see page 34 of the 2005 big game regs -- it says it's okay!
