Default Finally going duck hunting!

Been so busy havent been out. Got reservations for wed out at Sauvies. Hunting Racetrack, cant wait, we have reservations next week in Hunt unit also. Hopefully will start getting out at least twice a week now. Just wish the weather would cool down a bit now. Finally got the rain now I want some cold  Anybody hunted Racetrack this year? What blinds have been good. We are leaning towards trying to get 11.

My son and I got drawn for Mudhen, see ya in line.
If 11 is open it's always a nice hunt because
your by yourself. We had a couple of hunts last year where on one we were done by 11 with 10 greenheads and 4 hens(got antsy)if 11 is taken
I like 13 then 14.We probably won't get in line until around 10 pm,if your up look for a white F-150 with a white canopy.

Labsforme? You said in your post "10pm". Are you
going there the night before? I'm just wondering
because I have a reservation for racetrack on the
27th (Tues) and was curious of how soon to be there in the morning...Thanks

I try to get there as early as possible the night before(I am a die hard) so I have a choice of blinds. You have to be there at least 1 1/2 hours before shoot time on reservations, but the later you get there the worst choices you have.Besides you meet all sorts of interesting people in line, such as Capn Dan(decoy murderer),Baitboy and so on.

Well here is my two cents. If you are hunting racetrack, labforme is right, 11 (Gay Lake) can shoot awesome. It can also be dismal at times. I would say ask Rob or Jerry at the checkstation how its been doing compared to the main lake. Saturday Racetrack shot really poor along with most other places. I was out there on Tuesday last week and we finished up with 8. Mostly singles and a few small flocks. We were in 14 and 13 started out the day shooting a little better and then we mixed up our spread and pulled the robo off the water and things turned around. The wind is supposed to be out of the SE so 11 may shoot pretty well. Not having others around you is almost enough to make me go there even if i don't get a lot of shooting.

My advice is look to either 13 or 14, in that order. I was out at Mudhen (aka WWF Cage Match) a couple weeks ago and we were in 14. The usual good blinds are 13, 14, 9, 6 and 12. Depending on how many birds are working everybody will get pass shooting opportunities. Just make sure the ducks are passing and not swinging on someone else's spread. We were 8 cars back at 900pm and still got our pick. Be ready for some really crazy shooting and sky busting. Last week on Tuesday Mudhen shot 110 birds and on Saturday they only shot

I will be in the "sweat line" with my son. Any other cellar dwellars out there going to be in line?

On Saturday we finished up with 10 and had lot's of shooting so hopefully it will repeat itself.

Good luck!

We will be out there some time this eve to get in line. We will be in either my silver F-350 or my buddy's black one. Hopefully this stormy weather will stick around and everyone will have a good shoot and keep the birds moving. See ya out there

Here is my advice. If oyu have a blind in HUnt. Park in the non-res line and get a spot in Dead willow or mud hen.Hunt has been aweful as has been gay lake. I would recommend the main racetrack lake over gay. Ask Jerry what he thinks. I have jsut had aweful shoots lately at those two places.

Dan!

Well we hunted Racetrack 14 this morning. Not many birds working at all. We managed one Mallard hen between the three of us. I actually never even touched my gun today. So as far as shots fired and birds Killed we were 1 for 1. The guys in 12 & 13 got a few but the ducks just werent working today. No wind so they stayed rafted up on Sturgeon. Oh well next week we have Res. for Hunt and they started pumping more water in there today so hopefully it will be good then. I won't be out over the Holiday weekend but will be back next week. I guess I am a bit spoiled since I dont have to hunt the weekends. Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving.

We got a wild hair around 9:00 am. today found 2 Arron tags hanging. We had a great walk and set 4 dozen deeks. Just like the rest of you, nada... didn't even pop a cap. We all just missed the storm. Jerry said it has been happening everytime hunt day no wind and non-hunt days lots of wind. Just like tonight there will be tons of wind and birds moving... bummer!

I need to get back to the big water on the Columbia.
