Best way to oil and grease your gun
just got a new O/U. Was wondering what type of grease you all use to keep the hinge/action lubed?
What type of oil do you find the best?
How do you preserve a nice wood stock?
any other pointers on gun maintenance?

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
First you get some steel wool, a can of primer, and some green paint. Oh wait, you got one of them purty guns.
Oil for me is breakfree. Works in all temperatures for me, but use sparingly.
If you plan on using a nice stock while using a gun for hunting, good luck. Don't trip, fall, go through heavy bushes, avoid rain, snow, fog, and most important of all, don't let a dog get anywhere near your gun. after you run into all of these in the first year, see step #1.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
It's important to use the correct grease on the hinge area of a double gun. I understand that improper lubrication in that area can cause problems down the road with looseness.
I bought a double gun from Warren at The Gun Room in SE Portland. He gave me a small container of grease and made sure I understood how to use it. The stuff's a bit spendy, but I wouldn't take any chances with a nice gun. Can't remember the name of the product, but I imagine any quality gunshop or gunsmith can point you in the right direction. (If you go see Warren about this, you'll pay extra and hear more than you expected about the topic at hand....but you'll probably end up with the right stuff.) Mike

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
Fishforever, I buy into what Mike T suggests regarding hindge grease. Its about $11 for an ounce of good stuff but it will last you several years. A newer product on the market is a liquid that is allowed to dry before assembly called EEZOX. I have only limited experience with it but
unless your new O/U has chrome lined barrels you may find it worth the effort to swab them with this stuff to avoid plastic build-up. I bot my bottle at Allison&Carey for $8.95. It is a solvent, lubricant and rust preventative. If this is your first experience with a double its worth
finding out how to close them properly etc. A visit to any trap and skeet club and you'll get an earful. P.S. Ask about Tectra Lub but its hard to find.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
Consider these, used by thousands of trap and skeet guys and gals for millions of rounds with little or no wear. Actions- krieghoff gun glide,STOS sold through Ponsness/Warren and Grease One (Slick 50).Blued parts Rem.Oil by Remington. Slick 50 for choke tubes. Not asked for, but try Mercury marine power tune engine cleaner for plastic wad buildup. Winkie@ 27yds, miles of

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
Warren at the Gun Room will tell what you need and what you dont need. He will also tell you that the gun that you are shooting is a piece of sheet, even if he sold it to you 2 years earlier. What Warren currently carries is the best you can buy and you will pay more from him, lots more than down the street.
The guy just has soo much opinion about everything, right or wrong he will tell you. But the best part is that you can always find what you need and you can always get an opinion, take or leave it.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
The gun is not for me - for the wife who wants to get into Skeet shooting. Not wanting to loose the opportunity to get in more shooting and have it count as a date , i was happy to oblige her. Its nothing elaborate, but compared to the guns i drag through the mud duck hunting, its pretty nice. Ended up getting her a Browning citori lightning.
I have tried that eezox stuff - works great on the action and barrels, but seems a little light for the hinge. Dont get too much on your skin, highly volatile, soaks in, and you cant get rid of the smell for days. BTW, who carries it - havent seen it in the stores around here.
I think i'll try some of the other recommendations for the hinge grease.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
If you're buying it from Warren, Vaseline is an expensive lubricant.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
I bought a little jar of STOS to lubricate the hinge back when I bought my first over and under. Jar's still going strong and will last past my life time.
I think someone above mentioned Ponsness Warren sells STOS. I still remember what those initials stand for... Once you hear it, you never forget.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
I was told when I bought mine that it stood for "Slicker Than Owl Sheet".
I checked out the STOS and didn't think it was all that slippery, more like a regular lubricant, but I was still unwilling to position myself under owl roosts to complete the testing.
The seller did not use the word "sheet" but think the "bad word editor" here would leave that with just some **** instead.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
I was reading in Field & Stream last night where improper lubrication of the hinge can actually lead to improper headspace and eventually cause serious damage to your firearm. Is this true?

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
Dogfish
Let me share what I think is at the bottom of the
hinge pin topic. If the hinge, which most often is a large round bolt type constuction, is allowed to wear by either lack of lubricant or by bending it by slaming the action closed, the barrel will not fit tight against the frame. The frame acts the same way on a double that the face of the "bolt" on a pump or auto does. It is the same as the "bolt" on the pump not closing all the way. Thats my understanding of it anyway.

Re: Best way to oil and grease your gun
I jave also heard of galling (SP?), which is probably the wear you are talking about. My fancy break action gun solved that problem pretty ingeniously. One of the pieces is plastic. It is an H & R! Paid $69 at K-mart for it!
