Default Sauvies Snowfestation...

Hunted Sauvies today. Got a Cackler and a Snow goose. They came in last night and there must be over 1000 of them. I don't know if they will hang around until goose season resumes or not. Sure are pretty to watch fly.

Hey, and remember you have got to tag them on your permit and check them at the station, too. I never even noticed the "white geese" section on my card and almost got it punched.

Hevi-shot rules.

You can hunt snows over there??? Yeesh, I can't tell you how many times I've had them go by me in a duck blind and wish I could have shot. Anyone know the regs? I thought it only mentioned Canadas not white geese.

Birdhunter,

If you are hunting the wildlife area you can only hunt them in one of the goose units (Oak Island and Reeder). Private land is no problem when it is a NW Permit Zone goose day. That's been thorn in my side for years, why snow geese in the NW Permit Zone are regulated under the NW Permit Zone rules. I mean I've really not had a problem distinguishing a snow goose from a Canada goose.

So, if you are in a duck only unit on the wildlife area, or it is not a goose day and a snow flies over, don't shoot.

Thanks MoJet. That's kinda what I thought. You're right. Pretty hard to mix up a dusky w/ a snow goose. Even a blue phase! Seems like they shouldn't be regulated by NW permit. I suppose it's just an enforcement issue. "Honest officer, we're out here hunting snow geese."

Birdhunter,

As far as identification goes, it was tuff for me to restrain a friendly poke about the difference between a snow goose and Canada, being synonymous with the difference between a Ruddy duck and a Pintail.

AWWWW NAW! I WENT AND DID IT ANYWAY, DARN IT(!), I'M SUCH A LOSER!  Dang dang dang...

Just funnin' ya pa'dner...

I can't wait for Flathead's first screw up of the season.... hee hee hee.

At least it is the same species. If I had a dollar for every dead and wounded cackler I have seen out there I would be a rich man. I would venture to say more idiots shoot cacklers on "accident" than are legitimately harvested during the NW permit season.
