Default Sons first elk!

My 15 year old son shot a 4x4 opening morning! What an incredible first year he is having! I was standing next to him when a cow and 2 bulls came across in front of us and he shot the bigger bull. Other shots had been fired earlier and a neighbor got the other bull that we had seen. Total 6 bulls down (1 5x4, 4 4x4,and 1 3pt)and probably 2 others as there were several spikes that got away from our immediate area and we heard more shooting. The neighbor had his blazer in there and I had 100 ft. of cable so we were back at my house by 9:00 with a whole animal in my shop! This was in scappose unit, my hunt starts this saturday in saddle mountain. So my son and I have harvested 3 deer (4pt, 3pt, and a spike on my doe tag)and 1 elk so far. 1 more elk to go! All except my 3 pt buck opening day within walking distance of my house. Gotta love it! YEAH!!!

Wow!

What a great year. You still have room in your freezer for all that meat? Congrats to your son on his first elk. Sounds like a nice hunt and a great bull. Gotta love those easy packs. Good luck w/ your tag.

Ya know, it is stories like this that make me want to sell my gun and stick to fishing. I hunted the first elk season on the Trask/Wilson unit and nothing. General deer season, nothing. Where do you live, let me follow you in a car....

Oh, well congratulations on a great year. If you run out of freezer room, give me a call.

Thanks,

Erik

Hey fishunter2! You were up in Walt Buckley's clearing huh? Like 3 different hunting parites were at the same place at the same time and the elk happened to show up too. I got up there and everyone had shot their elk already. I started walking around the top of the clearing and saw the elk on the far side. We eventually caught up with them and shot a spike. We had to track it for a while but eventually finished it off. Did you get all those deer in the same clearing as the elk? Are you hunting Across the road in the saddle Mt. Unit? You must live close to me, do you live on Timber Rd? I think I saw you, Were you on the top Road with your son and another boy? If you were I was the one who came right behind you and you took off down the Road. I had been watching those elk all summer because I live right down the hill. I don't think that they will be out there for a while though.

Winterkill, I live right on the county line on Timber Rd. in the old George Smith place. I was hunting with Scott Bowman as well as my son. This year we deer hunted saddle mt. and that is where we shot the 4pt. and spike bucks. I got my 3pt. buck above the Forest Grove watershed at the top of Potts road. (I know Mark and Samm Potts) I would like to know which of my neighbors you are as it sounds as if you live real close! Shoot me an E-mail but I don't have access at home, only at work and after today I will be off elk hunting.

Well I didn't manage to get a bull during my saddle mt. hunt. I saw several cow herds and was close to a bunch of shooting up the N. F Wolf creek area twice. There were rigs parked where I wanted to go so hunted near but not close enough as it sounded like a war. I was in the timber and never saw a thing. Hope they didn't get em all!

yeah we didn't get an elk this season either. We were hunting the saddle mt. unit as well. I saw a herd but didn't see a bull, just heard his horns hitting branches. Some a-hole was driving around in one of our hunting areas by clearcreek, which is a walk in only area. They just drive around closed gateslike they aren't there. 1 for 2 isn't bad and we still got meat and thats what matters.
