Source for Seal Bombs????
Does anyone have a source for sealbombs? They are legal, and I have a trip coming up with my dad and brother in a week from saturday. I will be flying down and meeting them in Portland, while they fly up from California, So taking them from here to PDX would not work. So It would be awfly convienant if they were in the Portland area, or if they could be shipped to Portland!!!
Thanks, Kiley

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
Fireworks and other pyrotechnics aren't legal in Oregon. You'll have to look for them in Washington state, I think. I don't have any idea where to look, though. I'd guess that a broom stick would be about as effective. By the time a sea lion is hassling your fish, finding the bomb, getting it lit and getting it into the water might be a bit of a firedrill.

ORS 480.165
Civil penalty for fireworks law violations. (1) In addition to any other penalty provided by law, any person who violates any provision of ORS 480.110 to 480.165, or any rule adopted by the State Fire Marshal pursuant thereto, is subject to a civil penalty imposed by the State Fire Marshal in an amount not to exceed $500 per violation. However, an individual member of the general public who possesses fireworks of a retail value less than $50 is not subject to a civil penalty. Each day a violation continues shall be considered a separate offense.
(2) All moneys recovered pursuant to this section shall be paid into the State Fire Marshal Fund.
(3) Civil penalties under this section shall be imposed as provided in ORS 183.745. [1991 c.856 §§2,3]
You are not going to get into trouble for having a few seal bombs - worst case is they can take them away. I think Englunds Marine carries them and they cost about 3 bucks each.

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
Don't wait for that sea lion to grab your fish, the second you see one find that bomb and light it off. Usually those things disappear very quickly. Actually don't do that it is probably illegal.

Does anyone have a number for Englunds Marine? I looked through Google, but no site information came up, just old posts from here that had Englunds in it lol. Thanks, Kiley

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
A few years ago around the forth of july I was in a local sporting goods store picking up some ffg and cannon fuse, for my cannon of course, when I noticed some nusence bombs on the counter,I belive they were labeld as mole bombs or something like that. The guy working the counter said he could only sell them to me if I told him I had some deer in my garden that need'd to be scared away(with a wink)anyhow what I am getting at is I believe they are legal if used for the original labeled purpose...ie,scaring seals/sea lions.

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
After some careful thought I have re-evaluated my position on sealbombs in the Columbia.
You may want to avoid lighting one of those while hoglining or fishing in an area with other fishers, as not all will welcome such noise makers while fishing.
I for one hate the seals but would be more upset with the guy lighting off noise makers in my area..they have gotta have an effect on the bite especially in 20 foot of water and less.
I think seal bombs are/were created for off shore salt conditions,(100 feet of water and more??) and would create more problems than good in largely populated areas like fishing in the CR.

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
There are M80 looking things that farmers use to get crows out of their fields. Waterproof wick and everything. I'm not suggesting that you do anything but I'm sure you could get those things at some farmer supply. Also, Indian reservations can sell fireworks year round.

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
Brad, you are cracking me up!
I'm sure that Luke does not realize that we mods have lost count of the number of posts we have had to edit for suggesting that seals/sea lions should be shot, blown up, poisoned, run down, pics of sea lions with crosshairs on their heads, etc.
Everyone is frustrated with the situation and I am pretty sure that it would not take much prodding for some pilgrim to decide that his popularity would soar to hero status if he just "thinned the herd" a little. Next thing he knows he is in the slam facing a federal rap and his truck, boat and all firearms have been seized. He is trying to post bail but he can't raise the bondsman's fee because he has nothing left to hock.
Wait 'til you see the court appointed attorney.........his defense? He was encouraged by things he read on the internet.
Not gunna go there.
Not gun do it.
Wouldn't be prudent....

At this juncture....
I had some of the aforementioned bombs around here someplace. They're yellow, about 3/4" in diameter and about 4" long, with a California Dept of Agriculture stamp on them. Pretty wicked- the report is about like the old M-80's in days of yore. I'm sure it would do some damage if you dropped it in your boat. Especially to your eardrums.

Re: Source for Seal Bombs????
This is just a little off topic, but I'm just as frustrated with the sea lions as everybody. But the easy way out for the States/Feds. is to shut this fishery down. Think about the complaining that everyone is doing to them about this major problem, they don't even want to hear it. I hope I'm wrong about this! When a dead sea lion appears on the beach with a hole in it, guess who is going to get blamed. Wait, maybe they will blame the gillnetters....................Bobber Down
