Re: Tunaholics Madhatters?
I asked my doctor to test my mercury levels several months ago. They explained that they have to use special vials and even special gloves to take the blood and they didn't have any in stock at the time. They also told me that I could not eat any predator fish for 72 hours prior to the test. This is a big problem - I can't stop eating fish long enough to get tested!
Oh well... MUUAAAAAAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!
The good news seems to be that I only eat troll caught TUNA! (according to the calculator, I can eat 15 oz a week and still be under the "epa" limit

Re: Tunaholics Madhatters?
I read some studies on Tuna and Mercury as I pondered this.
Summarizing the studies, the mercury contamination occurs in the bait fish which tuna feed upon. As apex level predators, fish which live for a long time like tuna will continually accumulate mercury throughout there life.
The studies also pointed out that the majority of the tuna which end up canned are the older and larger 40lb+ fish.
Allegedly, the tuna caught by trolling/sportfisherman are the younger schooling fish which are 5 years old or younger.
Personally, I can't stand the taste of canned tuna.
I only like if fresh. Secondly, I plan to hit the salt for the first time this year in search of the mighty albacore and I'm only looking for the little guys.

Re: Tunaholics Madhatters?
1)AHA!! Thank you for yet another reason to appreciate the fact that I have survived beyond child bearing age!!
2)I am as sure as I can be that I will eat far more TUNA! in the future than I have eaten in the past. Nearly all the TUNA!I ever had to eat before was commercial canned.
3)That means I have been saving up my lack of mercury ingestion for the last 40 some years,... So now I can gorge myself from here on out!!!
Please pass the TUNA!! (especially that yummy, troll caught, fresh, juvenile albacore.
See y'all at the "Lab" tonight!

Guess I will be considered a EPA Hazardous clean up site when I get buried. I eat more fish than a seagull some weeks.

I'd be willing to bet you've never had REAL canned Tuna, just that catfood they sell in the stores. I'd never have believed it until I canned my own, fresh caught and properly handled and canned. Throw in a little quick smoke prior to canning for variety. The only way I like it better is raw!

Re: Tunaholics Madhatters?
Last fall I was tested for high cholesterol and I figured while I'm there draw an extra vial and have it tested for mercury,
It took 2 weeks to get the results because it is a mercury specific test, based on myself consuming 2 pints a week for over 12 months.
There were no "Traceable Amounts" of mercury.
I would not be too concerned about fish you catch out here and take care of it yourself. But I would steer clear of the crap they sell in stores.
