Default Artificials In-Salmon-Nation

Had some exceptionally good luck lately drifting artificial roe for steelhead. I know it's hard to beat properly cured bait for anadromous fish, but sometimes I wonder if the fake stuff, fished properly, can't give eggs a good run for their money.

Corkies and Okies etc. are notorious for their effectiveness, but have always admittedly taken a back-seat to bait. I don't believe many fish are going to take a long-chewin' on a hard plastic sphere......the result being many soft strikes and slack water strikes are missed. However today, with some of the newer "soft artificials" it may be 'advantage - fakey'.

The last 2 days, I have fished some rubbery Jensenegg-like roe clusters. They looked perfect, drifted with the perfect bouyancy and the fish were eager to submit....so why get my fingers all icky messy?

What's your experience? Can you compare their relative effectiveness to eggs?

It's the re-birth of the "Gooey Bob!"

Actually, if I probed the deepest recesses of my brothers' or my tackle boxes, I might even find a couple -- unless, in the four decades since passed, they reverted to primordial ooze.

It would be interesting to get some bait-boondoggin' expert like Clancy Holt to use these lil'fake clusters using his patened method and see if they compete. The small clusters would be just perfect for the long-leader, small-hook, boon doggin' rigs.

Yes...we are talking about gooey-bob part deux!
