Water dog, is the number one book. By Richard A. Wolters. Did you get a new pup???? We all have used this one time or another at least to get started.

What did you get? How old is it? What is its name? Where are the pictures???

Another good book is Retriever Training by Robert Milner. The Wolters book is good but I prefered Milners better. It seemed to go into more depth on why you are training the dog in a particular way.

Water Dog by Walters is great for the first 20 weeks. After that he just does not supply enough detail. Spencer's Training Retrievers for Marshes and Meadows can't be beat. Another excellent resource even if you never use an e-collar is Tri-tronics Retriever Training. This book is printed in large format with lots of diagrams and pictures. Both are available from the Outdoor Group, 8-4:30CST, 1-800-767-4868.

I know Jen isn't interested in hunt testing her dog, but if you are or if you just want a retriever that will dependably handle in the field, pick up Retriever Training Tests by Spencer, same source.

You can find all this information in any copy of Gun Dog magazine, available at Barnes and Noble. Check out the gorgeous call lanyards and leads hand braided by the very nice lady at Oak Creek Kennel in Salem. I wear mine to work and hang my ID from it. They are worth the money. WWW.leatherlanyards.com

Good luck Jen!

Jen,
I've got a 13 month old lab that has turned out to be a wonderful dog.
This is my first attempt to train a quality gun dog, and so far it's going fine.

I used the Wolters book for the hunting things, but found The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete to be the best thing out there to understand a young dog. Their approach to basic obedience and appropriate interaction with the pup was dead on, in my opinion. Wolters doesn't go into the same level of detail, but does have great material on training a duck dog.

Have fun with the new pup.

regards.....Mike

The book by the monks of new skete is very insightful. I would recommend it.

Jenny,
Please taqke a look at this one.

Family dog By Richard Wolters. This is the same author as water dog.

He did some research with the guide dog foundation and really gets into a dogs head. It will tell you why a dog is doing something that he is doing and how to best train through that problem. then move on to water dog and upland dog. He is a great author and isn't boring. Start with Family Dog first.

Good luck on your and feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions or problems that you would like to train through. Also I will volunteer Tilla and Labsforme as great sources of information on any training problems They are board members and have a great wealth of training knowledge.

Dan!

Default Hunting/training books for pups

Now that I have the dog, I need a good training book! Anyone?

Capn Dan and Tilla:

I just got Water Dog and have been reading it even though I am still several months from getting my puppy. I didn't see family dog at the Barnes&Noble i was at. In some of the text of Water Dog, Wolter's eludes to the fact that in Family Dog he includes some puppy selection advice. Can you confirm this? Can you recommend any other books that go into selecting a solid Lab pup?

An older book that is a classic is "Training The

Mike Lardy's stuff as well. For more advanced
training "Training the Retriever to Handle" by
Dee and Ann Walters.

I didn't see you say what type of dog you got or how old. Since you posted on the hunting board I will go with the assumption that we are talking duck dog. I couldn't agree more with the Wolters books. I had very good results and have recieved a lot of complements on my dog for the little amount of time spent.
