Default Mckenzie unit

Goin down for the weekend to hunt somewhere in the mckenzie unit for blacktail with muzzleoader. Ive never hunted that area before, does anyone have any suggestions on a good place to set up camp and hunt?

Artwo gave you some good advise, I like to hunt around Browder ridge also. Either end of the ridge is good hunting. The entire deer creek area is good hunting staying to the west and south side of the ridge. If I was going for the East end of Browder ridge I would stay low on Hackleman creek down in the flats this time of year.

Tons of places to camp along the roads in the area for free. If you want something semi-improved, you might try lost prairie campground. Thats all I am aware of in the area that people actually pay money to stay at. You get a hole in the ground "defueling station" and a fire pit for about $12 a night.

SeanD,
One more item, there is a series of roads that run from the Browder Ridge area west that will bring you out in the upper Calapooya drainage area by Sweet Home. It is about fifty miles and we see allot of deer while driving out when we just want to take our time going home. I've never looked at what the road numbers are I just know where to go when I'm up there so check out your map. My friend and his son drove it last year about this time for his sons juvinel (sp) hunt and caught some very big bucks right in the road along the way finally harvesting a nice 4x4 and another trip filled his elk tag off the same road. Might be worth alittle map reading for you to investigate, sorry I can't be more specific.

SeanD,
I think I can give you some good suggestions, I grew up in Albany and have hunted the upper mckinzie area for along time. With deer heading into their rut this time of year and have had some time in the field on juvinel hunts up in that area we have see some nice bucks up there this time of year. A couple of areas where I've seen decent bucks this time of year would be north of Clear Lake in the Browder Ridge area, Widcat Mtn. and Wolf Rock. Lots of gated roads in this area so you can get in away from the typical road hunter to some nice isolated areas. Another area we saw allot of nice bucks in last year was the upper Canyon creek area out of Sweet Home. There are plenty of camping spots in either place..............good luck.
