fuel flow meter
Installed the Navman 2100 fuel flow meter in my hewes, wanted to know how much fuel I am burning for those off shore trips. The problem is my yamaha 80 get such good fuel economy with the four stroke the meter wont register. I called naveman and they said to increase the sample time and see if that works. Has any one else experienced this kind of problem? And yes the unit is fine and works properly. I don't want to go back to the old useless fuel
gauge that never works

Re: fuel flow meter
I went for a trip with Kamalot and he told me that his flow meter would not register with his kicker motor 8HP Yamaha. I am not sure which model Naveman he has though. I am sure if there is a fix for this he would be interested and so would I. I plan on installing one in my new ride.

Re: fuel flow meter
I have navman 2100 also, but of course it only registers the main motor (merc 115, 2 stroke). I would be very interested in how to monitor the kicker as well! I used the kicker almost exclusively during fall chinook on Alsea, and almost ran myself out of fuel since the navman only monitors the one motor (unless it is installed incorectly...came with boat so I have never really looked at it)

Feel fortunate! My Flowscan registers at idle!

Re: fuel flow meter
manual says it will not register below 1 GPH, so you are out of luck w kicker
My kicker uses about 1/2 gal / hr (T-8 on 24') and I have the Nautamatic tach/hourmeter, so I do the math in my head and add that to the navman consumption. I also have a 3 "get-home" kicker tank on the transom with spare hoses..

Re: fuel flow meter
I have a 12 gallon above deck auxillary fuel tank, but normally only carry that one when out on the salt. I have a three and a five gallon tanks around here somewhere...
Guess it make tons of sense to bring one along

Re: fuel flow meter
I just got ours installed last month. It reads 0.4 gal/hr at idle and about 13 gal/hr WOT. This is with a 2004 150hp 4S Yamaha. I haven't changed the sample timing or calibrated the unit, yet.
I suspect that it will read below the specified flow but won't be as accurate.

Are you sure that's not reading in liters? You should be about 3-4 GPH which would be about right if your number was converted.

Re: fuel flow meter
I use the flowscan 32gph model. Until I got my wires uncrossed with the wiring remodel on 'Kismet' the meter only worked on the main engine. Even though the fuel takes the same path for kicker and main.
Turns out the meter power was connected to the ignition switch on the main engine. When running the kicker the main engine switch is off .. so no reading. I moved it to instrument power and the totalizer power to battery one so it is never interrupted.
The Yamaha 25 hp 4 stroke pulls about .5 gph at idle or less. This surges up as high as 4 gph but goes right back to < 1gph. I will report back when we do a river trial. It will be interesting to see what the little Yamaha burns at TUNA! slaying speed. The main burns 14 Gph at 3100 rpm and the boat doing 22 mph. I have made the gage go up to 28 GPH but I had it firewalled at 4000 rpm and 38 Mph.
The main is a 260 Mercruiser .. a 350 chevy.
Check to see if you have power on the meter when your ignition key is off.

Re: fuel flow meter
Northriverrick,
I think the numbers are gallons/hour. I checked the Yamaha performance bulletins and they show the same numbers I have within a gallon/hour.

Re: fuel flow meter
Reel Knotty, as Pilar said, if you want it to keep track of your kicker usage then you need to plumb the flowmeter in your main line before the split, usually before the fuel/water seperator. Just put an inline fuel filter before the meter. Water won't harm the flowmeter, only particles.
Although I had my kicker plumbed I really didn't worry about it because if I'm using that motor then I know that even if I ran it all day I'd only burn 7-10 gallons, which if I'm smart I've left myself much more cushion than that to get back to shore.
