Default NW Goose Season

Is anyone else going out for the opener of the NW Goose Zone? I know I will probably be laying in some field in the pouring rain saying "ain't this great Get Bit." There have been a lot of Cacklers showing lately and I know Get Bit wants to show off his skills with his new Saunders Traffic goose call. I heard it the other day and it sounds good to me, but I'm not a goose.

Watcha' want and go swat them little geese for? I'm holding out for the big birds on the east side. I like to stay dry besides.

Guess I still have horns on my mind, but good luck to all those that go. There's a lot of birds flying around here at the Portland airport.

Can't wait to hear the reports!

Labsforme, have you seen the est. 10,000 geese in the corn strips accross the road from us, is that your place ? That show has been going on for a couple of weeks now. We are seeing leftovers landing on our place now, but I still might fish Sat. if the weather is gonna be nice.

Tilla,we're right next to Johnson's and Jacobson's clubs. So that probably is what you're seeing.Even with that many birds we still have to be able to hit them.

Probably not on the opener. I have access to a private farm out in Forest Grove that has both fields and a pond. Our hunt usually goes like this, set up for geese and watch the ducks pile in on the pond 200 yards away. Or set up for ducks and watch the geese land in the field 200 yards away where we usually set up.

Just out of curiosity, anyone ever notice any differences in the goose hunting out that way versus some of the other spots in the NW Zone? Obviously scouting and getting permission is always the best way to ensure a good shoot, but we have been hunting this land, which gets used by the geese frequently, but rarely do that well. We have tried big spreads, little spreads, just big feet, just silo's, mixes, magnets, kites, layout blinds, fence row blinds, changing fields, changes spots in the fields, etc. For some reason they can see us or we are doing something very wrong. Any thoughts?

Boy you guys do this goose hunting the hard way

Just take a post hole digger out in the field and dig a few holes about 18 inches deep and about 8 inches in diameter. Spread a little corn around the top of each hole, and some in the bottom of each hole. The geese will eat the corn around the hole and when they try to eat the corn in the bottom of the hole they will get stuck in the hole with their wings pinned to their side and they cannot get out.

Just go out the next day and grab them by the feet and pull them out of the hole. Rebait and return the following day. Works all season.

No pellets in the meat to deal with, no wounded birds getting away, no gun to clean, dont have to sit out in the cold all day, no dekes to pack. Bird identification is easy at that close range. Little to no expense except a little corn. No shells to buy.

I am just kidding Dont flame me, just poking a little fun at you goose hunters. I have heard it works, but it wouldnt be much fun

I might have to drag the 12 gauge out and go poke some holes in the sky this year.

BOE the majority of the birds in this area right now are Cacklers so I would recomend a 6" diamiter hole until the larger birds show. Good luck this weekend if you go out.

Rauly I am not a member of a club. We got access the old fashioned way...we asked.

I am guessing the club you are referring to is the one that shares the same water source as the pond we hunt. As far as trades go, we have out shot "the club next door" on every hunt.

Unfortunately my hunting buddy is the one who happened to get us permission and I am not in a position to extend hunting invites for this property.

Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it.

Do you hunt geese out ther as well? Do you guys do any good?

LI,
Think we have our wires crossed as to where you guys are as compared to the club Rauly and I belong to. There is not much goose area on the property that we don't have leased. There is a small pond that the farmer dams up to flood some corn but unless you guys are on another farmer's land I don't think its the same one. As far as shooting goes, for the small parcel we have our hunts are much better then one would expect. Considering the prices at the island and that ours is 2.8 miles from the house, I'll take it anyday. Good Luck !!! Save some for the rest of us midget goose killers!

Are you on the old A.W. place? If you are, what was the deal with the corn strips? Some of the long rows were suddenly recut and look like they were left to only hide a blind in. Does J.W. still have the lease?

Labsforme, they were in there this morning as I was coming home. Have fun.

Rauly, I will pass on the geese. At least for now.
It is suppose to be foggey in the morning and the number of guys with birds should be very high. One
less in line does't help much but its better than one more. I'll go out for an afternoon try for a
duck or two and then a toddie....maybe.

An hour before goose shooting starts and I'm stuck at home. I guess that must be what drew me to this post.
Bigshark, I make a check out every year to A&W lakes. It is on the northern part of Sauvies island. Is this the same lake you were talking about?

Meridian, no I,m referring to Winter's. Their northern lake had two long strips of corn a few hundred feet long that look as though they were left for the waterfowl. About two weeks later the
strips were gone and three small spots maybe 30 ft square were remaining. I wondered if this was done to attract more geese and forget the duck food or what. Their south lake still has the two large strips. Thought I might learn something. Maybe the idea is one for ducks and one for geese
and they would keep the north lake dry. Just curious. A&W lakes is new to me or is it a new name for a place. Is it north of Petersen's. J.W.
had the lease on Winters last year but was told today it had changed. Last I heard he still has the Petersen place. But I don't know who has the lease on Winters. It's such a neat spot, I hope the new guys have a great year. I use to get invited to hunt the Linder bottom on Winters when I was a young guy. Back then a private spot was only a dream for me and I was awed by what that place was in the 60s. All the members had copper
mugs hanging on the wall of the clubhouse. Eached engraved with the members name. I don't know why that impressed me, but it did. Kind of like my first look at how the rich folk went about it.

I forget where the name A&W came from but we are on Fazzio's land. The lake we shoot is about 2 miles SE of the power plant. Yesterday the boys got 15 geese by noon. They were a little disappointed though. They expected to get more with the large number of geese working in the general area. Birds were flying high. Also they did not see one duck while they were out yesterday.

Meridian, OK I think I know where you are.We refer to your place as a west side spot. The place north of you with the two old silos on it was once called the Porter-Yett place. J. Egger bot it in the early 70s and it was renamed Pacific Ranches. I had a lease on the front part of that for a few years. Good goose hunting. The place with the power house on it is what most have called "Fazzio's" for years. Wally R. has had it quite awhile. They have had a great start on ducks this year, over two hundred for the first couple of weeks on the season. Don't think its producing as well the past week or so. Didn't hear them "volley" this morning. Your spot I think is the one that is owned by the young Fazzio that married Eggers daughter. I understand he is a superb farmer and will grow that ranch into a really big one. Lets hope so. Good people. Today was a better duck day for us for some reason. They fell out of the sky for the decoys like the were all lonely. Meridian did you do well on the early Sept hunt there?

Bigshark,
It sounds like you know the neighborhood better than I do. I have been hunting out there about 10 years now.
I did not take part in the September hunt. I just never have. Actually this last weds was the first day I even got out to the property this year. Spending to much time on the coast I guess. It was sunny in Portland but the fog was thick on the island. I actually did not even get out there until about 10:30. Only one guy there and he had 3 geese. He left about 11:30 when the fog lifted. Then it was my turn. Between 11:30 and 12:30 I got 3 geese. I didn't do anything special they just happened to come my way.
