Re: Scope requests
Older vari x II would be good. But I dont think you can go wrong with any Leopolds. The newer varix I runs about the same as the old vari x II. For a little under $200 to around $300 you should be able to get a nice Leopold that will make you very happy.

Re: Scope requests
On the classifieds, Chromebright is selling a new Leupold for $150. I think it is a VX I 2 X 7 X 33.

Re: Scope requests
I am selling a VX I 2-7.
Since we are talking new scopes I will tell you the story why I am selling it. I bought a new VX III 3.5-10 Boone and Crocket reticle on ebay. The guy was real slow in sending it. One of those guys that buys stuff wholesale after you buy it from him and then ships or has it dropped shipped. The price was right though. So after about ten day I email him and ask him what's up. He assures me that the scope will be shipped the next day. So 3 days later I get a scope in the mail. It is the VXI 2-7 I am like what the he**. So I send him an irate email. He claims he does not know what happened and assures me that my scope will be there soon. I leave on vacation for a few days and when I get back there is not 1 VX III but 2. So now I am sitting on 2 VX III 3.5-10 and a VXI. The 2 new ones were dropped shipped by some company in CA. A couple days later the UPS guy come by and says he has a pick up ticket for 1 of the scopes from CA. Me being a nice guy let him take it back, but if I would have wanted to keep it there is no way they could have gotten it back. I did not buy it from them and I payed via Paypal. I guess the guy felt bad because he never asked for the VXI back so I did at least end up with 2 scopes for the price of one and the one was a good price.
FYI the VX III B&C is awsome.

Re: Scope requests
The B&L Elites are pretty nice scopes for the money. I think B&L lost the rights to use the name so they now say Bushnell, but I have one on my 300WSM and have had zero problems. Built with many of the same features as the VXIII

Re: Scope requests
The best deal for the money right now IMO is the Leupold VXII 3-9x40. I think it goes for $280 for the standard gloss finish, and $299 for the matte. This scope is basically the same as the old Vari-X III which Cabelas was selling for around $475. If you just don't want to spend $280, you can't go wrong with the VXI, like the one cromebright is selling, and for $150 you can't get a better deal anywhere.

Re: Scope requests
I have had very good luck with Burris optics, never had any scopes or binoculars fog or not work for any reason. They are crystal clear and very bright.

Re: Scope requests
I had a Burris 3-9x40 fullfield a few years ago.Very clear optics.But... I was looking at a herd of elk early one morning in low light comditions.Could only make out shapes.
I then looked through my sons Leopold vari x II 3-9 and could make out every bull and how many horns.Very surprised at the difference in light gathering.

All my rifles wear Weaver Grand Slams, the most I spent on one was $360 for my 6x-20x scope on my varmint rifle - I used to be a dyed in the wool fan of Leupold, till their quality went south on me (I say me cause there are many others who have never had a problem) and I suddenly found out how good their customer service was. After the third trip on the same scope I wasn't so impressed.
Everyone here will tell you how good their customer service is - I've always wondered why so many people know that?
Burris, High End Bushnell Elites 3200/4200, Leupold, Weaver, Nikon are all very good scopes. When you get into looking at European Scopes there are even more to look at but they get pretty expensive.
Go out to Sportsmen's and take a hard look through all of them at Dusk - outside if they will let you - price compare on sites like Bear Valley, SWFA and Cabelas. Good luck

Re: Scope requests
Do a search for Mueller Scopes or just go to muelleroptics.com. I have heard some good things about their scopes and their warranty ain't bad either. I only know this from second hand information.

Re: Scope requests
My bro in law and I were shopping scopes for my Tikka 300WSM and the shop had a gunstock with rubber mounts so that you could stack two scopes and look thru them like you were sighting a shot.
We put a Leupold VXII and a Burris Fullfield II on it thinking the leupy would be the obvious choice. The Burris was the better glass, hands down.
Same thing happened at Sportsmans when another buddy who is longtime Leupold devotee compared to Bushnell Elite 4200 and Zeiss Conquest.
Leupy Vari-XIII was not even close.
I know Leupold has a following and the warranty is great.
For the $, there is much better glass out there.

Re: Scope requests
Leupold scopes are very good scopes but I like the Nikon a little better. I think the Nikon picks light up a little better and like Leupold they are a tough scope. I have a Nikon on my 416 and it's held up very well. I had a set of Sako scope mounts break because of recoil on my 416 the scope held up great.

Re: Scope requests
I have two scopes currently, and both are Leoupold. I have the VariXII 3x9x40 and a VariXIII 3.5x10x50. I like both scopes a lot, but if you can't fork out the money for the VariXIII go with the VariXII but get it in the 50 Millimeter. The 50 Millimeter lets in twice as much light as the 40 does. I have had excellent luck with both of these scopes, and their customer service is top notch. I don't think you can go wrong with Leoupold.

Re: Scope requests
I am fond of Leupold Scopes. I have been in their plant and have seen first hand their quality control and manufacturing process and now I owne one of their scopes. I am also someone who will buy "Made in the USA" long before I buy anything that's made offshore. The closer to home the better. Oh yeah, Leupold Scopes are made in Beaverton, Oregon.

Re: Scope requests
I just bought a Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40. I will sight it in this weekend and let you know how it works. I compared and researched a lot of scopes before I bought it. For the money $199.00 you really can't beat the Fully multi-coated lens with Rainguard. You can get it in variable powers for a little more $229-$279.00. Just my 2 cents.

Can't speak for anyone else but I know about Leupold's excellent customer service from when I contacted them to purchase a replacement cap for the elevation adj. on a scope that I bought used... they immediately sent me two new caps at no charge!

Re: Scope requests
I just purchased a Leupold VarixII in 3X9 for my .270 Wby and I am very happy with it. I also have a VariX III in 3.5X10 for my 300Wby. The reason I prefer the Leupolds is two fold. a) maximum eye relief which is really nice for easy sighting on game and recoil protection on mag-cartridges b)the most import feature to me is the "non-critical" eye relief which allows you to easily acquire a sight picture from the side of the exit pupil without your eye being perfectly aligned. I think this is huge while in the field trying to pick up moving game. I also think their optics are so good, that I cannot tell any difference with a more expensive Zeiss or Swarovski.
I love the glass on Nikons, but I feel that you really have to move your head around alot to get a good view and a clear sight picture, which is frustrating.
The VariX II is only $299 from Bear Basin and includes Leupold mounts and bases!

Re: Scope requests
Just my .02 cents. I used to have a Simmons 4X16 40mm. I really liked that scope, it range finded real nice and I could use it out to 500 yards with predictibility. It did fog though and the second time it went to Florida and was lost in a hurricane. Of coarse they had discontinued that model and they sent me a 6X18 pro hunter. Its a good scope, a little high powered in the brush and yes it does have eye relief problems at higher powers. Still, it gets the job done.
The one thing though that amazed me and my friends, was one time just at dusk we had been target shooting and we had a Leopold variX-I and a II and my old Simmons. We laid all our rifles on the bench so we could look at the target and we all took turns looking through them at the target. Yep, the Simmons was brighter, all agreed! Strange! You can't go wrong with a Leopold, especially when you live right here where they are made! But, they are probably not the only scope that will get-er-done! I also had a Weaver 3X9 that was on my rifle for many years, took a lot of animals with that scope, until the reticle fell apart, luckily not during a hunt. Sent it off to get fixed and had it as a spare, put it on my rifle when the Simmons fogged up and found out later that it shifted impact as I turned the power setting. Thats something every hunter should do each year, check power settings for impact shift.
