Starkey Elk Hunt
Just got back from a great week of Elk hunting in the Starkey Unit.
We did'nt bag one but saw a lot and had a great time.
Opening morning saw 107 Elk come out across 7 Diamonds ranch 10 plus spikes 12 to 15 Bulls and alot of cows and calf,private land no shots. Over that day saw about 30 more but not 1 spike.
Next day saw about 80 elk go back in 7 Diamonds ranch and saw 1 big bull dropped by land owner.
On our third and four day we went over to the back side of the unit just out of Starkey (the town). Saw a total of 6 cows and one got dropped.
The best thing that happened was a nice 3 point buck walked up to my hunting partner got within 15 feet and looked him straight in the eye than he got joined by 8 does and they started to dance around. That was cool.
Tomorrow going fishing a Tillamook.
PS Hunting tip from a smoke jumper at the forest service fire camp. hunt the new burned areas he was telling us that he saw alot of Elk back in the summer burn areas rolling in the ash.
