Default Trask deer?

I was just curious if anyone hunted the Trask for elk? if so where are the deer? My father and I have both buck and doe tags for the Trask as well as my mother has a general buck tag with disabled permit, so a hair tag. Can anyone help us out in finding the deer this weekend? we usually hunt the area around Hebo and up to the summit to the west. we were going to hunt most of the last week of the season to find some "dumb struck" bucks in the rut but with our work scheduals it looks like we will have very little time. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanx in advance Jon

Default Re: Trask deer?

Hi Jon,

I've hunted the trask unit for deer for years until the last 5 or 6. Spent the better part of 11 years hunting the area between HWY 22 and the Nestucca By-way. IMO because most of the land is public and because the forest service is not doing many timber sales the population of deer is not very high. I don't care what anybody says, there are not as many deer as there used to be. We used to see 20-30 deer a season with no effort at all. The last time I hunted the area we saw none and worked real hard to see that many.

When we did hunt that area we found the hunting a bit better down low. Bald Peak Road/Bible Creek has some OK areas out of Willimina that you can get too off the spur roads. Lots of heavy timber to prowel in. The Elk are there too. Just my 02 cents. Good luck.

Default Re: Trask deer?

Jon, With the weather change coming for this weekend the area around Hebo Lake should be a pretty good producer, if you have hair tags. There are a lot of deer in that area and west of GrandRhonde in the Spirit Mt. area. There are a lot of clearcuts and burned off areas to hunt and they are all surrounded by good cover. I have to agree with Waterdog, the deer population is way down and i beleave it is because of the heavy brush, there is just no food for them. The area around Fancreek off of the nestucca also holds a good number of deer if you can find them. A good windy rainy day is just what you need. Good luck.If you by chance know anyone in the lower hills above McMinnville that will let you hunt you have got it made. Thats where all the deer are at.Good luck Cagey.
