Was I wrong?
Getting all kinds of carp (change the spelling if you would like) anyway trolling around with a spinner and rod pumps, once and then again go to grab the rod figured it was going to stay down and and as soon as I grabbed the rod, the tip came up and fish was gone. Did I have the wrong mind set that I should wait for it to bury, or should I of grabbed it on the first pump? The boys in the boat says I was sleeping on point I thought I should wait for the count. Hind site says I should of grabbed on first take down is is that the general rule?

Re: Was I wrong?
With a spinner, grab it quick has always been my rule. But the bigger question is, did you foul up, and I say no. If the rod is bent down, they usually keep going in the same direction. Get to it as soon as you can put the donut down, and you'll normally be fine. Except when you're not, and that's just why they call it fishing and not catching.

Re: Was I wrong?
wait......wait......wait......wait......wait.....w ait.....rod tip nearly touches the water....NOW!!!!! .
However, in a way I agree with SH - with a spinner, it'll usually go down hard. Gotta kinda watch for the kind of take, I guess.
My take, anyway.

Re: Was I wrong?
I think the bigger question is what do you do as you take the rod out of the holder. I have a very good friend who has this habit of leaning forward to the fish before he rears back, which throws slack in the line, which I think causes him to contribute to the 67% hookup ratio we get. Keep the line tight, and get a hookset in there, and that's what matters.

Re: Was I wrong?
your not wrong,i have had fish grab kwik fish, and other plugs with treble hooks on then and they beat the crap out of it and when ya grab the rod they are gone  how does that happen with two treble hooks.if its meant to be your gonna hook the fish.then ya have to worry about keeping it on and getting it to the boat before the FB,s get it.

Carp have a very soft mouth. Take it easy on the hookset, keep the pressure, and you'll be into some of those golden-scaled wonders in no time!
I need to get out.

Re: Was I wrong?
we always try to hold the rod when trolling with spinners. Use a rod that allows you to see and feel the blade spinning. If the rod goes dead swing. If you feel a pull, swing. If you feel or see anything odd, swing.

Re: Was I wrong?
First off make sure your hooks are razor sharp!!!!
I have to agree with dead stick. With spinners if something feels different set the hook. Last year at the coast 4 of the 7 salmon I caught were on slack bites. The other 3 just about ripped the rod out of my hands.

Deadstick is right on the money. Hold your rod when fishing spinners and you will increase your catch rate. If in doubt hammer it. Most of my friends call me Hank Yank but I hook more fish than they do so I put up with it.

Let the rod load up and then grap it.

Re: Was I wrong?
After 1st pump of the rod I hit the throttle to bury the hook, if you don’t do this when you take your rod out of the holder it can give enough slack in the line to release the hook if it's not buried past the barb. Give the throttle trick a try next time.

Re: Was I wrong?
When fishing spinners I like a real tight drag and a sensitive rod so I can see the spinner working. It has been my experience that salmon hammer spinners both on the troll and on anchor and most of the time hook themesleves. I dont get too many slack bites but I am trolling with the current most of the time... I think you get more slack biters going against the current.

In my boat, NEVER!
The only time I want a fast hook set is trolling spinners in the bay or drift fishing from a fixed position. All others the rod shouldn't be touched until it is down "flat" and not pumping at all, if you want the fish for sure that is.
I see more fish lost becuase of pre mature hook set than any other reason, both on my boat and on boats around me.
We loose/miss hundreds of opportunities a year becuase of this and I'd rather not even fish with someone if they are cronic "yankers"
It's one of my pet peeves.
My bad, I missed the part about you were trolling spinners. In that case it sholdn't be in the holder.

Re: Was I wrong?
Thanks David, this is really good to know.
Most of us arent fortunate enough to learn from hundreds of missed fish...I for one will take your advice!

Re: Was I wrong?
I have fished for Springers with Dave Johnson, and when we went we were up at Bonneville back Trolling Quick Fish. Dave told us to set the hook while the rods are still in the rod holder. It worked very well for us that day. Dave said that many times you loose the fish while taking the rod out of the holder. Although, I think he might of changed his mind half way throught the trip, once I had almost ripped his rod holders off his boat setting the hook I did go 2 for 2 that day.

Re: Was I wrong?
When I troll spinners, especially in shallower water I always hold my rod and set the hook at the first feeling of something happening, slack line or light bump. Many fish I hook most people would never even know were there if they didn't have thier rod in hand... Don't miss hook ups this way...
