Congrats on the deer! I remember a trip to the bottom of a canyon with three extra orange vests on my third deer. I dressed the deer up in the spare vests, and orange flagging, hoisted it upon my shoulders, and hoofed it up the hill. It was easier than dragging.

A few years ago, some friends and I invested in 3000' of 3/16" cable. It is perfect for yarding out a deer, or even an elk from just about anywhere. We rig up a few snatch blocks, and up the canyon comes the deer. I think that we got the cable for about $300.

Sorry for the sore back. Andy

I shot a couple of deer over the years in this one place known as Devil's Canyon.

First one (1989) was a "six-foot deer". It was one big enough where my buddy and I dragged it 6 foot and stopped, 6 foot and stopped, and then 6 more. This one was estimated at 270 pounds live weight. I got the horns mounted on this one as it was my first real BIGGG deer. Two of us had a real hard time getting it loaded in the truck.

Somewhere in the early 90's shot another one that was 225-250 pounds. Was lucky enough to have a 3wheeler along where we could get across the bottom of the canyon to within 100 yards of the deer. It was a fun, one person drag.

In 1995 I shot one there that was somewhere around 325 pounds. We cut that one in half and took it out in two trips. This one was in a spot that we could get a vehicle closer to it by going thru a hole in the fence. This one was 27 inches wide.

Went back in 1998 and the weather was so sloppy that we couldn't get over to hunt the canyon. Couldn't make it up the "road" and got stuck twice where we had to walk back to camp for help getting towed out. Shot one that year that was the "perfect deer".

It was in an area I could drive up to the deer to load it. It had horns that while only 22 1/2 inches wide, would score higher than the 27 incher from a couple of years earlier. It also had a smaller body... about 180 pounds live weight where I could get it up on the tailgate of my truck by myself.

Boiled the head out on that one for a european skull mount for overtop the downstairs fire place.

One thing I noticed about the 1st three deer. They were all shot within a small quarter mile area. I tried to get to that area the year of the mud, but had to hunt an different area that had better drainage. If I ever get back there again, I'll head right to that one finger ridge in the canyon.

Devil's Canyon is a place where you park up on top where it's flat, and then hike down in to hunt the bottom.
