Elk season is finally here
Took me 4 years of trying to draw my Ochocco elk tag, I am loaded and ready to take off after work. Hope to have the wall tent up and warm by midnight tonight. Scout for the next 4 days and start hunting come Wednesday.
I believe the cascade elk hunt starts tomorrow.
Anybody heading out today for what only comes too far apart?

Re: Elk season is finally here
Wouldn't you know it....my last 2 trips out for Blacktail, I've walked 'right into the herd'! Could have easily taken a 5 point bull, that stood and stared at me, at apx. 30 yards, for 3 minutes. He had 3 legal brothers with him, too. The next day, I headed for an area nearby and had an entire herd cross right in front of me , single file, at about 60 yards. A giant branch bull led the way, and again, about 4 other legal bulls were in the bunch!!!! I have never seen so many truly adult branch bulls hang right with the cows at this time of the year. Now, if I can just muster up this same luck come Saddle Mountain second season. Yaaa, I know.....won't happen.

Re: Elk season is finally here
Actually, I just got back from hunting the Idaho general season. Ended my season in the first two hours by shooting a 4X5. My partner bagged a big 5X5 in the evening hunt on opening day... then the work began. This hunt ended way too soon, guess that beats getting skunked again! Good luck everybody.

Re: Elk season is finally here
What do you mean, elk season just beginning? I picked up my ground elk and pepperoni from the butcher today, all 172 pounds of it. Of course I have about the same in steaks in the freezer, as well.
I'll be thinking of you guys, slogging through the wet salal and ferns, while I am fishing for silvers, snackin' on some elk 'roni. Maybe I'll even watch a game or two.
Best of luck from one who has 3 elk in 4 years. Got to love cow tags!

Re: Elk season is finally here
You act like its no fun to be elk hunting Dogfish. I'm not going elk hunting though its too dry for elk, I'll be Hunting deer.
Hunting elk is fun especially in the snow. Nothing like walking down a windy ridge in the snow and seeing a bull elk Then you say, "Ever heard a glock go click like a camera?" KABOOM!!

Heading out to Starkey this weekend. Got the spike only tag, but hoping to figure the unit out as will have enough points for a hair tag in a year or two.
I just like getting out in the woods, no cell phone, no laptop, no TV.......

Re: Elk season is finally here
Just got back from a morning hunt at EE Wilson. 2 phesant and now I'm packing up for cascade elk. Going somewhere outside of Oakridge. Did well there last year. Tag teamed a massive 7x7. There were two identical monster bulls right next to each other. My buddy shot the first one and they ran down a hill. One came up the other side and I shot him. Thought we had two elk down. Instead I shot the same one as my buddy as the other bull snuk out the bottom of the draw. We'll see if we can't find him this year. Mu ha ha ha ha.

Re: Elk season is finally here
Well I am one of the few, the proud, coastal elk hunters. I head out tonight for 5 days. I hope this storm comes in as promised otherwise it is going to be really rough. Good company though, going with my dad and father-in law. Beats the heck out of working.

Re: Elk season is finally here
WK,
I was just giving those westside hunters some ribbing. Elk hunting this year was a five minute affair for me. Go figure? I am getting ready for the clusterf#@k that next year will bring me.
I agree with the hunting in the snow. I hunted the hills above Ellensburg for about 5 years every late muzzle loader season. Nothing like tracking elk in the snow. The drag in the snow is SO MUCH nicer than any drag in the western woods. I never took an elk any other way than whole.
Best of luck to you all, and may you have a downhill drag. Andy
