Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
My Brother just bought a new shooter, the Rem 300 ultra Mag. I looked at the charts and this gun sounds like the perfect elk gun much better than the 300 Win. My brother sighted it in, and he describes the recoil and a push not a hard thunmp like my 300 Win.
I have not shot it yet but from what was told this new Remington sounds like a sweet shooter.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
so what's gonna happen when something hotter than the .300 Ultra comes along???
Don't take this as personal criticism Jet, it's a rhetorical question as I'm not a believer of "bigger is better".
'course then I was eyeballing the 7mm STW as the "ultimate antelope rifle". I've had some nice antelope stand around in front of me in excess of 500 yards on ground as flat and as bare as a pool table... and wondered how to get to them. I thought the 7mm STW would be good out to around 650 yards or so.
So, what's the groups like with the .300 Ultra? And was your brother looking for long range or just a rifle to smash elk?

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
You still can't beat a nice 10 yard shot to the heart. I am a believer of getting close, and of shot placement, but having the knowledge that you can reach out and touch something a few hundred yards away is nice. The issue that comes to bear is that few s******* out there can hit anything reliably past 200 yards. Pick your targets responsibly, and practice, practice, practice. I would like to try one of those cannons, once.

Zen
I think he just wants to take meat as humaninly as possible and have the option to take a long shot and have enough energy to do the job. AT 500 yds. it looks like this for a 180 gr.Factory load.
Drop 29"
vel.2325
Energy. 2160
Good stats in my book, you can pump anything up and get good numbers but this out of a factory gun and factory ammo. Most of us really do use the best stuff they can afford. You do have to find the amimal first.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
Have your brother use a 300 yard zero and he'll reduce the hold over even more.
I use that zero on my deer rifle (a 7mm Mauser) and have popped a few deer in the 400+ range. One was at 525 yards and needed about 30 inches of hold over.
He won't need to "hold low" on any close range body shots as the vitals on an elk are rather generous.
What he should do for grins is take some gallon milk jugs over to eastern WA, put them out on a long range hillside, estimate the range, hold appropriately and try to pop them. Milk jugs flying don't count as those are low hits, but if he sends a spray of water flying... that's a hit.
Certain "military s*******" employed for their marksmanship abilities play that game with jugs at 800 and 900 yards. I suspect they use even higher than a 300 yard zero.
Back when I shot competitively I could do 10 shot rapid fire groups from a bolt gun that would just about be softball size at 300 yards.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
My brother shoots a Browning BAR 338 exclusively. I've seen him take a deer at 750 yards. It was a clean one shot kill.
But then again he reloads his own ammo and was a Sniper for his local sheriff's department. I've seen him time and again fire three rounds at a 750 yard target that I covered with a dime, every time.
It all comes back to practice. I had a hard time sighting in a 300 Win Mag, he took the same rifle and placed three shots so close together I had to look closely to make sure there were three holes. Now I wear glasses.
I guess I'm bragging a little but it all comes down to not taking the shot if you are not completely sure it will take down your target and that it is a safe shot.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
I'd like to see a guy shoot like that. I'll even drive down to Hillsboro to watch it.
Set it up.
The Wimbledon is a 1000 yard shoot and the bullseye is 20 inches across. The best in the USA are hard pressed to shoot a perfect score because of mirage, wind and inconsistencies in the ammo components.
Your brother must be a very good shot. He's not using his BAR when he does that, is he?

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
Read the book called marine sniper about carlos hathcock and you will see what Zen says is true. Hitting that 20 inch target is tough at 1000 yards. You get 3 minutes to shoot the shot if I remember correctly. You either hit the target or you dont, miss and your out. Last one shooting is the winner. I thought it was a 30 inch not a 20 inch target but eitehr way it is a little bigger than a dime. Or did a different dime cover each bullet hole just kidding you Ray, I wont question it unless I see it
Carlos has more confirmed kills than anybody. He spent a lot of time sneaking around vietnam.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
I was referring to the X ring in the center of the target. The 10 ring is 30 inches across. The general rule is the rings are 1 1/2 minutes of angle. At 200 yards the X ring would be 3 inches across.
When Hathcock shot the Wimbledon, he did it with a Win Model 70 target model in a .30/06.
It's a little easier to do it today with the .300 Mags shot there. Faster bullet, better bullet BC. Still have to hold steady, estimate the wind, and figure out that dang mirage.
Heard from one guy shooting that match, that when he did it the wind was so bad that he had to hold on the target next to him just to hit his. This was a guy classified as a High Master. HM's have to average 97% or higher to get that classification. That even covers the 20 shots fired offhand at 200 yards. A 97 is 9 10's and 3 9's if you're curious.
That type of organized shooting does make for a better deer shot. Prairie dog shooting in Montana does also.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
My brother lives in Blackfoot Idaho.
He has taken me to school many times on the range.
If I were relying on someone to take a shot at someone behind me it would be him. Just let me pay him back that $20.00 first
He won that from me the last time I bet him he couldn't make the 750 yard shot.
The 3 shots were not exactly in the center of the bullseye but the group was so tight that a dime covered all three.
I wouldn't have beleived it my self without seeing it with my own eyes.
He took another $20 shooting chickens at 200 yards off hand with his 454 Casul (SP) field grade side arm.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
Isn't the Ultra Mag a beltless cartridge? That would be the number one advantage to it. It would make it a much more accurate cartridge. Most of the 1000 yard guys will turn the belt off the case so that the cartridge will headspace on the shoulder instead of the belt. Much more consistancy that way.
Three shots covered with a dime at 750 yards? That would be world class if shot in competition. I think the world record for 1000 yard heavy class is right around 3-1/2 inches on a five shot group. I have shot NBRSA and IBS bench rest for many years and never seen anything like that.

Re: Remington 300 Ultra Mag.
Brshooter,
My thoughts exactly... 3 shots under a dime at 700+ yards.. won't say it's hogwash, but if it does happen, it's more because the planets aligned (and Age of Aquarius is playing in the background) than rifle/sh ooter ability as it's more by accident than anything else.
