Default Springers and wobblers

Here's something that's I've been thinking about. Is there a reason why Alvins etc are so successful in the fall, but I never hear about using them for springers? With the weird water conditions this spring, I've thought about plopping one in. Any and all thoughts appreciated.

I think it mainly ahs to do with water temperature. In the fall the Columbia can run 70 degrees at the surface. The fish will run near the bottom where the water is cooler. In the spring they run shallower due to their laziness to get out of the current. They will take bait and wrapped kwikies really well at this time of year. Spinners will start hitting em when the water temp gets near 50 degrees.

What Stgeelheadslayer said..It's about the temps..Spinners and hardware at 50 +...Wobblers in june!!!!

I do know some guys who like Alvins in May trolling the incomming slack tides and the birth water of wobblers (the willy)..they do okay ..I'm sure if we didn't have kwikies and bait, wobblers or spinners would be the go to...but they are most effectively used when the temps are warmer.

The first year they opened the Columbia for springers past March 15th I caught my 1st Springer on an Alvin, then my next on a Spinner. A couple of years ago, I saw folks using them above 205 on the Willy and doing very well for springers (back when there was current on the Willy).

last year in the first of May, I did very well trolling them when the water warmed up and they quit taking herring. The only downfall i found was the fact that when i troll, im bouncin bottom, and getting hung up on the bottom is part of the game, but it's much easier on the wallet to lose a moochin rig verses a wobbler at $8.00 a piece or so.... But i did find that the action was well worth the loss in gear mulah$ So Yes they do work quite well when the temps warm up, As good as any spinner from my observations

Ahh, it's the temperature thing not the flow thing, got it.

Thanks to all, that really helps. I love IFISH!!

The only reason they dont catch springers in the fall is people dont use them... if I have my wife and kids out anchored up for springers I usually run one rod with a Alvin, one with a spinner and two with kwikfish. They work just fine... some days better than kwikfish. Fish only bite wet hooks!

OK, so with the water temps we have now, is it a herring show ?

52 degrees and under usually herring works best... when the water hits 52-54 degrees I like to try both... over 54 degrees hardware but herring still does work but I am just lazy and like spinners!

Me, too. I hate screwing around with bait, but I do it if it's the hot ticket. I'd rather do the Kwikies or a wobbler.

BTW, what ever happened to the old Willamette Wobbler? Those were good spoons. I used 'em for lakers in AK and Schoenborn spanked the silvers in Lake Michigan with 'em on one of his old shows. I'd like to get ahold of some if I could.

Wobblers work great for springers. I run bait on the bottom outfit and a wobbler on the top!! anchored or trolling it works !!
