TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
According to my installation instructions, I need to install my gyro compass in the foward third of the hull. The problem I have is that I have so much electrical equiptment already up there, I don't know if I can find an area with 18 inches of clearance from any electrical or magnetic source. Any Idea's?

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
Chris,
Most of the units I have looked at (including mine) have the gyro mounted under the gunnel (Gunwhale). If you have the large Air Ride seat bases you must keep a little distance from the large metal mass, but other than that the gunnel give a nice, out of the way, location. Look for a cross-brace under the gunnel to attach it too....makes for an easy mount.
Good luck and enjoy.

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
Chris,
I ended up installing mine on the bulkhead (under dash) on the port side. Far enough from the seats and VHF coax. Works great
I installed my own, so if you have any other questions give me a holler.

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
On our deep-V, Hewes Searunner hull. The TR1 folks installed the gyro under the passenger's glove box. I'd guess that's about 18" above the floor.
The deep-V hull makes the boat easy to rock, and even at the fully damped setting, the TR1 works poorly in any sort of chop.
To try for better performance, I'm in the process of lowering the Gyro to the boats centerline, but underneath the step of the walk-through windshield. Hopefully lowering it will negate some of the boat's rocking motion and allow the TR1 to perform better. I should know the answer after next weekend.

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
Good idea, I have thought about moving mine as well. I think it being on centerline will help it a lot as well as being lower. Whenever a boat wakes you or it is choppy out, the TR-1 will just flop back and forth making corrections until the hull has settled down. Still tracks straight but makes a lot of fuss doing it.

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
Mine is under the dash as well. I was thinking of moving it as well to lessen the constant movement when I hit a swell or wake. Love it but it sure searches for a happy place a lot

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
I mounted the Gyro Compass behind the bulkhead in the center of the boat under the windshield about three inches above the floor. This was the only location where I felt met the criteria TR1 specified of not being close to any electrical or magnetic fields.

Re: TR-1 Gyro Compass Location
I mounted mine under the floorboard centerline between the two front seats. It tracks fine and is out of the way of all electrical, magnetic and steel masses. I moved it from the forward port bulkhead, it operates very smooth now and has much less compensation issue's plus I don't have to worry about it getting bumped by anygthing.

What, you don't like doing donuts down the river for no apparent reason ?
I finally secured mine with some black electrical type to prevent unintentional re-alignments of the gyro.
