Default Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Rabbit Season!

Why do I love October? Could it be because virtually every weekend brings the opening of a season on some game animal? Make that a BIG 10-4 good buddy.

Ducks open up this weekend. Prospects look about as good as the blacktail did last weekend. Clear skys, no rain and plenty of night light. Still, I can't miss the duck opener. Waterfowl season is my favorite type of season. Ya get to shoot lots and they're easy to pack. Rather than count on the marshes I'm gonna float a zipperlip and jump some greenheads. Perliminary scouting reveals high concentrations. Translation: We should get some birds. More than sitting on our a**es at Sauvies anyway. Last year was easy limits on the river. This one might be tougher. We'll see.

Sunday I've got a decoy spot on the Columbia I just want to try out for kicks. Figure it out before I try to set up at o-dark thirty some rainy December morn. If it sucks, I'll try for some salmon.

So who else is gonna scrap the deer and fish and go after something w/ feathers? Some of you bums got private prop to hunt on. Probably got heated blinds, fresh coffee, world champion callers for guides and perfect purebred retrievers. My show will be totally public and I don't have a dog, but I do have a fishing pole. I'll give you reports on numbers, but don't even think about asking for specific locations. (that is barring teeth, not mad)

Best of luck out there boys.

Yep you are right! This is the time of year when you get to live what you could only dream about since the last season. Even if you didn't get a new toy to take into the field, the thrill is overwhelming. It must be something genetic thing from a time long ago when our kind hunted to eat........ Which
reminds me that some of us had better get off that couch or we will be eating that store bought crud again.

My scouting has shown that the ducks are starting to gather, but lack of water is my biggest problem. Can't find enough water in my usual areas, so I might pass on the opener.

Birdhunter - Might be willing to provide you with the use of a good retriever, if I can tag along, I wouldn't need to carry a gun if I could get my youngster some retrieving work.

I was laid off yesterday With severance pay and a little unemployment I will be able to hunt quackers and honkers during the whole season! Either check traps or fish mid day. It will be a stress free winter. Everybody have a great weekend!!!!

Thanks you very much for the offer Gooseman. That is very generous. However for this weekend the boats are already over-booked. How do you fit 4 people comfortably in a 16' DB? Besides, we'll be able to do fine retrieving birds w/ the boat. Might be willing to take you up on it later in the season when I've got some free time.

What kind of dog you got? I had a cocker spaniel who died last year at 18. He'd been pretty slow the past few seasons, but it was better than me swimming out there. Really good dog. Fishing pole still comes in handy though. I'll have to scan some pictures some time of a Sept goose hunt I have. Shot these two honkers in the middle of a pond and then realized I had to get them. Got some funny pics of me reeling in the dead geese w/ a bass rod and plug. I'm looking at a lab for the future, but it looks like I'll be bird-dogging for this season.

Sledder - sorry to hear about your job. Sounds like you should have a good season though. Hope it all works out. You trap too? Not too many of us left out there. I just do some ADC to get access to property and since I'm already out there duck hunting. Might actually pay for gas this year. Mostly work the Clack for beaver, muskrat, nutria, raccoon and the odd mink.

This time of year reminds me of what once was and we goofed up. In the beginning of this great nation there were no taxes, no deficit,no polution, lots of game, the women
did all the work and the men only hunted and fished. How did anyone think they could improve on that? Went to the island early this morning.....couldn't find a duck anywhere.....But there are a lot of pheasants
on the east side.

Oh do I love Fall, this is the best time of the year. So much to do it is sometimes hard to decide. Gonna concentrate on hunting this year, been fishing a couple days a week all year and time to start chasing birds and maybe deer again this weekend. So much to do and so little time Hopefully we start getting some rain.

Birdhunter - I'm a glutten for punishment, I have 2 female Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. The older of the 2 just turned 7, and the younger one is 1-1/2. Both are experienced, but I need to shoot some more birds over the youngster.
I would appreciate the company of another hunter, and the opportunity to get some work for the dogs, as I recently lost my hunting/fishing partner.

Hey Bird.
I know I'm never around. But I have the same offer as Goose. Not as good a dog, but he'll do some. If you ever wanna go for a jump shoot or something, might be able to go. Probably the same odds as my fishing though! Anyway.....
